Suicide Attempt in City Hall
By Antonio D. French
A woman tried to jump from the second floor rotunda of City Hall today. City Marshals would not comment on the record, but witnesses tell PubDef the woman, an employee in one of St. Louis' county offices, was upset at being reprimanded at work this morning.
Witnesses say two people, one of them 4th Ward Alderman Sam Moore, helped pull the struggling woman back from the ledge before Marshals apprehended her.Labels: City_Hall

Greens: "Show Us the Money!"
By Dan Martin
Petitioners from the Gateway Green Alliance have acquired enough signatures to require an audit of the City of St. Louis.
Missouri law requires a number of signatures on such a petition equal 5% of the number of people that voted in the last gubernatorial election - in this case, 7,200 people would suffice. The Greens, however, have collected over 7,500 signatures, and will continue to collect signatures should the petition be challenged, as challenged petitions require more signatures.
The petitioning effort began back in 2006 when the city was unresponsive in answering the group's questions concerning how money for lead poisoning prevention was being spent. The response came only after months of letter writing, and even then the city only supplied data for 28-35% of lead remediation money. For Greens, that is unacceptable.
The Green Alliance is joined in its efforts by the American Federation of Teachers Local 420, the Universal African Peoples Organization, and the Organization for Black Struggle.Labels: City_Hall, Health

Russians Visit City Hall
By Dan Martin
At today's Board of Alderman meeting, Board president Lewis Reed acknowledged a delegation of Russian political leaders currently paying a visit to the St. Louis area. The group, sponsored by the American Council of Young Political Leaders, is making a stop in town on its larger tour of the United States.
The ACYPL is an organization that provides US and international leaders between the ages of 25 and 40 the opportunity to travel abroad and experience other political systems.
License Collector Mike McMillan is acting as the group's host while they are in town. A veteran of the program himself, McMillan told PubDef that the program "gives you a very broad prospect of the types of challenges... of different governments throughout the world... and of the role of the US abroad."
Dave Chilenski, Deputy Chief of Staff for McMillan, noted that the Missouri stop has been of particular interest for the visitors. "Missouri was almost more interesting [than DC]" for the visitors since many of them "aren't from Moscow, so they're more interested in how the outlying regions function," said Chilenski.
The Russian visitors will spend one more night in St. Louis. The next stop on their tour of America is Salt Lake City, Utah.Labels: Board_of_Aldermen, City_Hall

Daly to be Sworn In Today
By Antonio D. French
When Gregory F.X. Daly is sworn in this morning as St. Louis' new Collector of Revenue, it will be the first time in nearly 60 years that someone has risen to that office by virtue of an election.
Daly's office sends the following history lesson:
In 1950, Del Bannister was elected as Collector of Revenue as a Democrat. Bannister left office and Midge Berra was appointed as Collector to fill Bannister’s unexpired term. Midge Berra died in office, and Jack Travers was then appointed to fill that unexpired term. Jack Travers left office to take a corporate position and was replaced by the final appointee Ron Leggett, who held the position for more than 30 years. While each of these esteemed officials won subsequent elections, Daly will be the first Collector in 57 years to obtain the position for the first time through an election.
Daly was elected to Collector of Revenue on November 7, 2006. State law requires the Collector to take office in March, rather than January when the other elected officials are sworn in. He will be sworn in by the Honorable Jack Garvey, Circuit Court Judge for the City of St. Louis. Mayor Francis Slay is scheduled to make remarks on behalf of the city, and other city officials are expected to attend.
The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. today (March 12) in City Hall, Room 208 (The Kennedy Room).Labels: City_Hall
