Mo' Money, Mo' Money

By Antonio D. French

Filed Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 6:00 AM

BREAKING EVEN: State Rep. Jamilah Nasheed raised almost $13,000 last quarter. But she also had almost $13,000 in expenditures (mostly returning over-limit contributions). Before the quarter, she had $16,569.58 in the bank. At the end of the quarter, she had $16,540.06.

BARELY ON THE BOARD: Don Calloway, candidate for state rep in north St. Louis County, raised less than $500 last quarter. And Committeeman Curtis Royston, candidate to replace State Rep. Connie Johnson, raised just $1,400.

MAYBE IF HE HADDA SPENT IT: Former Aldermanic President Jim Shrewsbury is still sitting on $40,000.

THE LAST-TERMERS: State Sen. Maida Coleman raised $1,750 (including $250 from software giant Microsoft and $650 from pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly). State Sen. Harry Kennedy raised $9,000, spent $2,000, and had $12,000 in the bank.

Why are last-termers raising money?
Just to give it to someone else?

Don hasnt even started to try to raise money. Lets see how he does in Q1 '08 before we start damning his campaign. The man technically kicked off his campaign in Jan 3, 2008.

And the reason last-termers are probably raising money is to put it into their districts legislative committee and give up to 10x the contribution limits to people they want to see win their seat or surrounding seats.

I thought I saw on ACC that Don had a fundraiser earlier this month. The host cmte looked pretty long, much more than a dozen people. And he still couldnt raise more than $500???

Don had a kickoff/fundraiser on the 3rd. FYI any thing raised after Dec. 31 doesnt go on this quarter. So everything he raised on the 3rd will be reported on March 15th report.

Vernon may win, although I doubt it, but he didnt have a quarter very noteworthy either. His campaign kickoff barely registered a bleep on any blogs.

But Vernon has the majority support of North County politicians & labor clubs. He runs a quiet campaign and he has been behind the scenes for 15 years. Watch out!

Endorsements don't vote. It will be a close race between Calloway and Harlan. Calloway will likely pull it out if he can run an energetic campaign, and can tap into fellow attorneys for fundraising.

Don Calloway is very arrogant, cocky, rude, and offensive, not to mention that he doesn't like Black American people! He braggs about working at an all white law firm, except for him. Don Calloway is a great token Negro attorney, and we don't need another token Negro attorney to represent the people of North County.

Maybe he should wait and try to get appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court by Governor Matt Blunt, since he is really a Republican anyway!

Don Calloway even spoke in favor of Mayor Slay in the St. Louis American, knowing that many black leaders were forming a recall against Slay. Don Calloway spoke against supporting former Fire Chief Sherman George through a recall against Mayor Slay, knowing that Fire Chief Sherman George was the first Black American Fire Chief!

However, most people know that MOST ATTORNEYS are NO GOOD LEGAL WHORES and they get paid by the hour just like the STREET WHORES!

IF DON CALLOWAY SPOKE AGAINST THE RECALL OF MAYOR SLAY IN THE ST. LOUIS AMERICAN, THEN WHY IS THE LEADER OF THIS RECALL (JAMILAH NASHEED) LISTED AS ONE OF HIS SUPPORTERS AND ENDORSERS? IS THIS TRUE ANTONIO? JAMILAH HAS NEVER FLIP-FLOPPED!

Don did NOT write the American in support of Mayor Slay and did NOT speak against Chief George. He simply outlined a different strategy for an ends mean. Obviously you didnt read the article, or either your reading comprehension is not up to par.

And why is this a black or white issue? Both these candidates are good people and mean well, its really no need to put one down in order to make the other look good. Thats why the black community faces the problems it does now, we are to busy hating on each other rather than focusing on the real problems within our community. Both these guys have lots of support, both would do a good job representing the district.

First, those who post anonymously lack courage.

Second, as another person noted, Don did not speak in favor of Mayor Slay or against supporting Chief George. In fact, Don's purpose in writing the article was to point out an alternative strategy for supporting Chief George. Please READ before you comment.

Third, Don is a lifelong Democrat who fully supports progressive policies.

Fourth, my experience with people that accuse others of being arrogant or cocky is that they are usually insecure people with inferiority complexes.

Fifth, I have never heard Don "brag" about working at an all white law firm. And law is still a noble profession, despite common misconceptions and stereotypes perpetuated by the ignorant and uninformed.

Finally, I hope that this election cycle sees the level of political discourse elevated to new heights. I hope that young, thoughtful, energetic leaders like Don will be catalysts for bringing statesmanship back to politics. The person who referred to Don as a "token Negro" graphically demonstrates the need for an intellectual revolution.

Calling yourself "robert" doesn't tell us who you are anymore than just posting anonymously would.

Anonymous,
You are correct. I failed to fully identify myself.

Very truly yours,

DonCal should have raised more money. Plain and simple. Due to his gladhanding anyone he sees, talking about being the only black at a large white firm, bragging about how much money he can raise for other candidates. He gave the impression that he would raise more money. Hell, I was expecting him to pull in at least 10k by now. And while it is understood that the money he supossedly made during his kick off campaign will not show until the next reporting period, that wasn't so bright on his part nor his campaign advisors' part to not have a fundraiser to demonstrate some sort of financial strength before the reporting deadline.

how much did his opponent(s) raise???

The only thing Don Calloway ever did wrong was let a guy smack him in his face and not fight back. Don Calloway took the higher road and ran away from the guy.

Don Calloway will not run away from Republicans when they slap him in his face and he will stand up like a man and fight for white rights. Don understands the need for blacks to do what white people tell them to. The white people have been good to Don Calloway at his law firm and they allow him to stay suited and booted (corporate style).

Don Calloway will be the next Clarence Thomas in the Missouri Supreme Court, whether black people like it or not!

Clearly, the friends of Don's opponent have bombarded your board, Antonio.

Only in St. Louis can a race between two (or more) black men be made into a racial fight.

How can he be accused of being white, or a sellout? You've never met the man, I'm sure! The kid grew up at Matthews Dickey, in a black church, and went to a black college. Where is this coming from? When has he dealt with any republicans?

Robert S. Kenney, who I don't know, is so correct on this one. Contemporary African Americans are so frightened of a bright and accomplished one of their own people. It's unbelievable sad.

Keep doing your thing, Don. Clearly, having inspired this kind of virtiol, you're doing something right.

Both Harlan supporters and Calloway supporters are on this board which means the campaign trail will be cranking heat in 2008. Should be an interesting race to watch.

Harry Kennedy is only raising money to give it to his "Mother
Figure" Joan Barry. Even though he says that he is running for a statewide positon....come on...who really belives that ?????Maybe assistant to someone in a statewide
office. The only people that know him are the people in the city of St. Louis.
