Mayor's F.I.R.E. Mess Getting Ugly

By Antonio D. French

Filed Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at 8:36 PM

Leaders of the city's black firefighters association said today that Mayor Francis Slay's removal of Fire Chief Sherman George has created an "energized atmosphere of defiance and intolerance" among some white firefighters, and it is in that atmosphere that a toy monkey was left hanging from a makeshift noose at a northside fire house over the weekend.

The F.B.I. has been notified of this possible hate crime, but Abram Pruitt and Wayne Luster, co-chairs of F.I.R.E., said no one from the Mayor's office nor Public Safety Director Charles Bryson had bothered contacting F.I.R.E. regarding this incident, despite the organization representing 98% of African-American members of the department.

i think that the majority of the firefighters are good people doing a good job and following the direction of the new chief, unfortunately, there are still a few bad apples in the department causing all the problems.

I dont think FIRE has to worry about the Mayor's office contacting them......I'm sure the FBI will be contacting them very shortly!!!

I truly come away from this meeting feeling dummer. Uh, I, Can, Read, From, This, Paper. Where was the KKK member with chains?

And what does the promotional test have to do with this weekend's incident? Seems like they just wanted to fabricate a story to get the FBI involved in something else.
I'm Jim Rome and I am out.
SALAMI!

FIRE's not the certified bargaining representative of the firefighters of the City of St. Louis; Local 73 is.

Why would fire be notified? They are a hate group.

The firefighters have a union but they should only be notified when something concerns collective bargaining.

The white firefighter that stole the monkey from the fire scene will be fired as it is a violation of department policy for a firefighter to take anything from a fire scene! Molitor's statement to the press indicates he knows who stole the monkey and he will rat out his fellow white firefighter after the FBI finishes with him!

Of course. It was a white man. How stupid of me. I should have known all along the blacks don't steal anything like cars or electronics, especially from their own people in north city. They wouldn't dare steal from their own. What was the race of the firefighter at engine house 29 who stole his fellow firefighters paycheck. Oh yeah, he was black.

And anonymous, what would you know about STLFD policy?

As for Molitor's statement, he speaks for Local 73 becuase that is HIS JOB as president. He has spoken with the members at the 13's and explained to the media, the truth. But of course if a black firefighter was wrong, that would just be ludicris

Darwin says I (along with everyone else) evolved from primates. The stuffed animal's face was white.

Maybe this was actually directed at me.

I really just don't even have the patience to parse my way through all of the allusions and codewords of Richard Callow's remarkably indirect blog posts anymore. Is the blatant racism the merry prank? Who is the merry prankster?
