The coalition seeking to remove Mayor Francis Slay from office appears to have won a battle in a much larger war. The group's threat to protest a public fundraiser for Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has forced the campaign to find someone other than Slay to introduce Clinton at the high-profile event.
The Post-Dispatch reports that former Congressman Dick Gephardt will now be introducing Clinton at her event at The Pageant on Sunday. And Traci Blunt, a Clinton staffer in charge of African-American media, tells PubDef.net that African-American clergyman B.T. Rice will join an otherwise color-free host party.
Today the recall coalition held a press conference outside The Pageant to warn that if Slay makes a surprise appearance at the rally, they'll be ready.
"We have purchased a block of tickets [to the Clinton event]," said spokesman Eric Vickers. And if the mayor should appear on Sunday, "those people that we will have on the inside will protest the fact that this mayor has discriminated, divided this city, and disrespected this community."

Wow, I'm impressed that the protesters have made Slay feel the hurt so early. I have to admit, I didn't really understand the tactic when I first saw the protest announced on this site, but it looks like it really paid off.
On the other hand, I am a tinge disappointed that Slay couldn't have spoken and been interrupted. In a way, he and Hillary are perfect for each other; both are affluent oligarchs who run as Democrats but might as well be Republicans.
Fortunately, there should be some other protesters there for Hillary:

Saying it is so, doesn't make it so-- even if you repeat the lies many times.
Slay was never on the program. It was always Gephardt.
Keep telling yourself you matter and make a difference. Although no one else believes it, at least you believe it. That's better than nothing.

Even when the truth is right before their eyes, they refuse to see it. How will we ever progress?

Who is the highest profile democrat in Missouri to have endorsed mrs. Clinton? Anyone higher than Slay?
if he was never on the program---why is that?

The highest ranking citywide elected Democrats to endorse Obama are Board Prez Lewis Reed and Comptroller Darlene Green.
The highest ranking elected statewide Democrat to endorse Obama is State Auditor Susan Montee.
The highest ranking local elected Democrat to endorse Obama is U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay, with U.S. Rep. Rusty Carnahan second.
The Democrat in Missouri with the highest national name recognition to endorse Obama is Clay.
Based on who was available and had the most name recognition, it certainly makes sense that Clay is the leading Democrat who introduced Obama at the recent rally at Union Station.
The highest ranking citywide elected Democrat to endorse Clinton is Mayor Francis Slay.
Clinton has no endorsement from a statewide elected Democrat. Auditor Montee endorsed Obama. AG Jay Nixon and SOS Robin Carnahan haven't endorsed.
The highest ranking local Democrat to endorse Clinton is Mayor Slay.
However, the Democrat in Missouri with the highest national name recognition to endorse Clinton is former U.S. Rep. Richard Gephardt.
Based on who was available and had the most name recognition, it certainly makes sense that Gephardt is the leading Democrat who would introduce Clinton at the Pageant event.
Who is it that is most likely to possibly draw national media attention to Clinton's campaign stop here, Gephardt or Slay? Clearly, the answer is Gephardt. If Gephardt and Slay had endorsed Obama, Gephardt would be the one introducing Obama. This isn't rocket science.
When Obama was here, there were three events: the meeting with local elected Democrats, the low dollar rally, and a high dollar fundraiser. The local elected Democrats did not attend all three.
Seeing intrigue in Slay's participation at one Clinton event but not others is as preposterous as seeing intrigue in Board Prez Reed not being on the stage at the Obama rally.

The protestors are right, that damn Slay should be shunned by all justice minded people! My dog even hates that damn Slay,he growls everytime he sees him on television!
12/01/2007 4:23 PM
Slay will be at all three of the high dollar events. The Clinton campaign is ashamed of bringing him out in front of the mixed audience, but not the private, mostly white & wealthy crowds.

Thank you Howard. Very sensible answer. Nothing wrong with old-school, centrist traditional ex representatives, steeped in the ways of Washington d.c. like RG.
He is certainly an appropriate "face" of hrc's campaign.

Will anyone in the media have the opportunity to ask Hillary about this story regarding her "you can trust me ad"?
Clinton Hostage-Taker Cites Her Campaign Ad
December 01, 2007 3:33 PM
ABC News' Kate Snow reports: ABC News has learned that Leeland Eisenberg-- the man accused of holding hostages at Hillary Clinton's Rochester, New Hampshire campaign office for six hours on Friday-- cited one of Clinton's campaign commercials when he entered the office and claimed to have a pipe bomb strapped to his chest.
According to sources, Eisenberg was complaining about insurance issues and mentioned a recent campaign ad widely seen by NH voters
"She helped that guy, she can help me," Eisenberg told Clinton campaign staffers, referring to Joe Ward, a Clinton supporter featured in the ad. Eisenberg demanded that Senator Clinton talk with him. On the advice of law enforcement officials, the senator never did.
Eisenberg never actually had a bomb, but had road flares strapped to his chest. The hostages could not see what was under his jacket and believed it could be a bomb.
Joe Ward is a New Yorker who was also featured in TV ads when Clinton ran for Senate in 2000.
In the testimonial ad, which features somber piano music, Ward intones: "Let me tell you a little story. My son Joel had a terrible illness. He needed a bone marrow transplant that our insurance wouldn't cover and we couldn't afford. We called Senator Clinton and asked for help. Her office called the next day, letting us know that the hospital was going to absorb the cost of the transplant. Now her opponents are saying that Hillary can't be trusted? I trusted this woman to save my son's life, and she did."

Howard, with that insane logic, former Congressman Bill Clay would have headlined the Obama event.
Besides the fact that the Clinton campaign confirmed that Slay was originally going to introduce Hillary by calling Nasheed and Vickers to ask them to cancel the protest after he was no longer going to be doing it. Antonio printed the transcript of the voicemail for you!
Slay apologists are amazing!
12/01/2007 10:32 PM
Why would Bill Clay be there? He is out of politics. His son on the other hand, well let's just say I would gladly vote for Rita.
I never heard that Slay was ever going to be at today's event. It seems to me that some of the recall people are just making this stuff up as they go.
By the way, Mr. French how many signatures are you up to? Just curious.

Thank you Mayor Slay for doing a great job for St. Louisians!
The more these assholes protest, the more I want to get friends out to vote for you...they are helping the cause with their protest rallies and recall campaign...
If anyone has divided this City racially it is the black groups like FIRE, and a handful of folks always protesting...they are the cause of the problems, and quite frankly, i believe that's what they want...I wish they would move to a black town with all black people, and see what they protest then!

First of all calling yourself anonymous doesn't shield your identity in that we still recognize an anal cavity when it presents itself. Secondly, we were on a black continent and you didn't leave us alone. After we built the only civilization you have ever known, we had black towns, such as Blackjack (MO), Rosewood (FL), BlackWallstreet (OK), East St Louis (IL)and you got jealous.
How dare you talk about protesters; it was white protestants who came over here and stole this land in the first place.

Nat Turner still lives!! "Go to a black town", said the fool! These are my favorite type of people. Yo mayor hadn't done anything fool. St. louis is still a ghost town. Look boy, there are resturants sitting idled downtown because "night hawks" like you are afraid to support your own establishment. Richard Gephardt is one of the framers of a plan to watch north St. Louis dismantled, "Team Four". Why is Hillary so intent on being president? Why does she want to go back to the same place where her "trick daddy" husband had an affair? Gephardt, Obama was a state representative before he became senator. Obama is a FRESH FACE!! Gephardt, how did George Bush beat you? George Bush is a C- student and he managed to send you packing. Hillary will make a good ambassodor to Austria. That's it DUDE! I support Obama because I believe he's honest. I believe leaders of other countries will welcome someone different. Francis Slay, why aren't your supporters spending money downtown? Native or indigenous people were here first fool! Give me $250 million and I'll leave America...it's your move fool!....Nat Turner lives forever!.."Let's Git Ur Dun"..Ha! Ha! Ha!
12/03/2007 8:46 PM
Po righteous teacher and Nat Turner said, thank you two for spitting knowledge at that fool talking about " move to a black town..."!
