Former St. Louis Fire Chief Sherman George will receive an award from the St. Louis Chapter of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU).
George is receiving the Ernest and De Verne Calloway award for continuing – according to CBTU – "In the legacy of the husband and wife team of Ernest and De Verne Calloway of St. Louis and to the causes they championed."
Ernest Calloway was the Director of Education for Teamster's Local 688 and De Verne was the first African-American female State Representative elected to the Missouri Legislature. The team championed causes such as civil and labor rights.
Roosevelt Broadnax will also receive a Calloway award. The ceremony will be held Saturday at 6:00 PM in the Renaissance Grand Hotel downtown. Tickets are $60.

is this a joke or what ??
sherman george as a member of F.I.R.E is anti union. do these people know anything about how he worked and let those around him work against anything the union tried to do to help ALL firefighters under his watch.
F.I.R.E bars any member from joining the union the represents all city firefighters. they work against any measure the union brings to the city to help ALL members.
its not a black vs white issue. he was very anti union.

Local 73 has a decades long history of discriminating against blacks and women! That is why F.I.R.E. was formed to seek to have blacks treated equally in the fire department!

If all blacks joined the union they would have a say in their benefits. Local 73 are the only ones who can work for benefits. FIRE works against the union no matter what it is. Sherman is black and that is why he is getting this award, not because he is a good union man. Its all about color and not what type of worker or person you really are.Look past the skin color and tell me he was right. Like I said before 50/50 list he promotes and doesn't use the excuse that the test didn't test the ability of the candidates. He would stillhave his job. His choice and he got what he deserved.
