VIDEO: Hundreds Rally to Recall Slay

By Antonio D. French

Filed Monday, October 22, 2007 at 6:00 AM

Nearly a thousand people protested outside City Hall on Sunday in support of former fire chief Sherman George and in support of removing from office the man who demoted the 40-year veteran, Mayor Francis Slay.

Yeah, I guess a couple hundred people (Ch 5 called it "dozens") is pretty close to "nearly a thousand."

The Post said there were 250-350 people there. Pud Def is reporting a thousand. That's a pretty big difference.

PubDef has video. There were AT LEAST 700 people there.

Pause the video at the beginning and at the end. You do a head count.

If Channel 5 said dozens, they should be ashamed of themselves. If the Post said 250, they must have drove by before the first speaker even started.

The video angle makes it look like a large crowd, but most of the shots are fairly close up, so it's hard to tell the size of the crowd. I will watch it again. The photos on Steve Patterson's blog makes it look like a few hundred. On the Pub Def video, I thought I caught a glimpse of Alderman Bosley. True?

I have a question for the protesters. How does the recall of Francis Slay help to heal the racial divide in St. Louis? What else is necessary?

Since a large percentage of the protesters come from outside the city, how does the recall of Mayor Slay help heal the racial divide in the St. Louis region?

If anything, it seems the City of St. Louis is more racially united than other parts of the region.

The case could be made that the hatin' white people who wanted to get away from blacks left the city years ago, while (most) white people who choose to stay in the city like black people.

If you're looking for places with a racial divide, what about St. Charles County or Jefferson County? But the city? C'mon, we're the most diverse burg in the region.

In fact, in national statistics, the city of St. Louis compares well when looking at the percentage of racially intergrated blocks (blocks with at least 20% of residents from two different races living together).

We beat ourselves over the head about our racial divisions, when in reality, we have made a great deal of progress in the last ten years.

Good point.

Usual rabblerousers with the usual garbage.

I am proud to live in the City because of its diversity.

The county is the home of the racism.

10/22/2007 8:41 AM is right. We in St. Charles County left the city because Blacks were tearing up the city. We shot down a Metrolink initiative just to keep the Riff-Raff out. Yes we may have white trash over here, but we don't go around killing each other like they do in North St. Louis every night. Blacks want segregation more than whites do. I mean really did all of those supporters really just show up because the Chief was a good man. The answer is no. One of the main reasons they showed up is because he was black. If he was white he would not have had any of that support from the "Black Clergy" and all of those racist groups.

And the above comment is why I left St. Charles County to move to the city. And my aging white mother wishes MetroLink was available to bring her down her to visit me.

A great man once had a dream that his children would be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. And yet I find my self living in a city in which the black leadership insists on judging people based on the color of their skin and not the content of their character. Racism, nepotism and cronyism are WRONG. Either black on white or white on black it is the same evil, and can not be tolerated. Sherman George was wrong; he compromised his integrity in order to advance the personal agenda of a few of his friends. And it is disgraceful to now hide behind race. Shame on all those that know the truth; but, perpetuate lies and propaganda for political gain. Martin Luther King would be disgusted by those of you that have perverted his dream by defending Sherman George based solely on the color of his skin and not the content of his character

I think, above, if you are willing to state such a dreadful thing about the character of another human being, you should be willing to sign your name to it.

No one has yet offered any explanation as to how the recall of Mayor Slay would do one thing to improve the racial divide in St. Louis.

Point in fact?

People were talking about a racial divide long before the Sherman George demotion.

So, the divide was already there.

Removing Slay won't change something that was a fact with or without him.

10/22/2007 1:17 PM

That's true. If someone was being posited as a replacement, someone who was willing to run if Slay is recalled, and that person seemed to be the type who could have a positive effect on race relations in the city, then it would be worth getting rid of Slay. Whatever else he may have accomplished, he hasn't been able to do anything about this. And it doesn't seem likely he will. I saw on another news outlet that Slay is pulling together his own team of people to work on the racial divide. He hasn't learned yet that you can't just always work with the people who are already your cronies, you have to be able to work with everyone to make progress in an area this sensitive. He can't do that. This is his Achilles heel.

A lot of people would be better than Slay. Not to discourage anybody, but what are the chaces that a recall effort would succeed? (Raw Statistics would be nice)

Ok, who's it going to be?

Do you want Vince, Freeman or Clarence? They all did such a great job.

Oh, I know, how about Ms. Green? She is sooooo competent and we all know how reasonable she is. And she can just expand our government back to the disfunctional way it used to be.

Francis is the first decent person in City Government in around 20 years.

I don't like him but he is good at his job.

There will be so much fraud in the handful of petitions that are actually turned in that the clergy coalition will have to spend MUCH time in confession and less time pretending they're the "conscience" of the region. What a bunch of silly losers. And you wonder why N. St. Louis makes Darfur look pleasant?

Anon 10-22 10pm are you for real? Don't be confused there is crime and danger everywhere. There was a front page article about underclassified rapes on the south side. There are bomb threats in the Hazelwood school district. There are children abuducted in the rural communities and taken to Kirkwood for 4 years. The cheif of police has a daughter who was caught doing drugs while her daughter was with her. The mayor of St George is in custody for marijuana possesion. There are many places that have criminal activity in the STL. Don't be fooled by news reports about another shooting in NSL. There are shootings and shots fired calls going out all over the city. There was a shooting and pistol whipping on the Hill a couple of moths ago. That report was quick and it disappeared just as quick. And may I remind you that incident involed a drug deal. So make sure you do your research before you make such a negative statement. Living outside of NSL does not guarantee safety. I am a former police officer in the city of St Louis. I am speaking from experience. There are officers in North South and West that have arrests for illegal guns, drugs, stolen cars (which were usually cars traded for crack "rock rentals"),assaults, sex crimes, child abuse, arson, street robberies and any other debauchery that you can think of every day.
