VIDEO: F.I.R.E. at Bryson's House

By Antonio D. French

Filed Friday, September 14, 2007 at 1:08 AM

Only four days on the job and Charles Bryson, the new public safety director, has already received his first mob of angry citizens to descend on his northside home. Lucky for Bryson they were carrying picket signs and not burning torches.

Bryson and his boss, Mayor Francis Slay, have given Fire Chief Sherman George until 5:00 PM Friday to make the promotions. If he does not, he will be "disciplined" on Monday.

F.I.R.E. is the new version of the klan. They should both be outlawed.

Fire King George and disband this bigoted organization F.I.R.E.

Why has is gotten so bad. Why are my brothers and sisters acting the same way whites did back when I was a child.

White or black racism is wrong. Goodbye King George and goodbye F.I.R.E.

Have our great city leaders Lewis Reed and Darlene Green addressed this issue? Where's the leadership?

BTW, I find the previous comment's suggestion to "disband this bigoted organization F.I.R.E." totally repugnant. The right to unite and express opinions collectively (especially those of a political nature) is our most cherished First Amendment right. The proper reaction to expression of a group's opinion with which we disagree is to express a contrary opinion and engage the opponent in rational discourse, not suppress someone else's freedom of speech.

As a St. Louis Firefighter I would like to express to you some of the problems that I see with F.I.R.E.

It is easy to sit on the sidelines and discuss problems. It is another to provide solutions to the problems. At no time has F.I.R.E. attempted to bring to the city possible solutions to the problems. F.I.R.E. is a thorn in the side of progress.

Chief George has been the Chief since November 1999. At no time in his tenure has he proposed possible solutions to this problems. The reason is simple. If the Fire Chief and or F.I.R.E. agree to a solution prior to a test being administered, and the test results are similar to the 2004 exam, they will not have an argument in court. It is easier to allow the city to give a test and then throw stones.

I hate being so synical but that is the way I see it.

Here is a possible solution. The Fire Department has a training academy. Have the training academy provide an officers candidate school, with a sylabus, and an outline of what they feel in important qualities for a Captain or a Battalion Chief to demonstrate. Then when the Personnel Department awards a contract to a testing consultant the said consultant will review the training materials and develop a test based on what the Fire Department teaches. Currently there is not job development classes offered by the Department individuals are forced to learn on their own. If a person is not self motivated that person will not succeed. If person A sutdies 8 hours a day and person B does not study, who is going to be more successful.

Additionally the Civil Service Rules that place the burdon of hiring and promotion testing in the hands of the Personnel Director is there to prevent political influence. That includes internal political influence (friends of the Chief ETC) It is a merit based system, those who are successful should have the opportunity for advancement.

The last poster (before me) is a black member of Local 73 pretending to be white

See, two can play at the straw-man game of ignoring what someone says and attacking the person, now run along little boy.
