The St. Louis Chapter of the Missouri Association for Social Welfare is hosting an education forum today featuring School Board President Peter Downs, Special Administrative Board member Richard Gaines, and PubDef.net editor Antonio French, who will serve as moderator. Labels: Schools
The topic of discussion will be: "If the city public schools debate is about the children, then what about the children?"
What is best for the city school children as we move forward? What do the children need? And what can we do to help?
The event will be Friday, Sept. 21 (that's today) from 12:00—1:30 PM at the Heritage House, 2800 Olive Street (at intersection of Olive and Leffingwell). The event is of course free and all are welcome.

So---how did it go? I was tempted to come by---but i am an outsider, and have been more interested in the politics than the children---which is still important, because they make so many decisions which impact the children.
I assume there will be a report from the moderator---a few things I have wondered about....maybe you picked up some vibes...
was there any mention of the programs superintendent Bourisaw favored--they seemed to clash a bit with what Kent King thinks should be done....one was the Gates program...another was slps having a separate on-line service from the state---with a different, (and from what i could find out) a better corporation.
what is up with sodexho--and who is dealing with the situation---Bourisaw, sab, united effort?
Was the new guy for media relations---Little, there?
how is the relationship with the sab and Dr. Bourisaw?
who are Rick Sullivan's most supportive allies---has he created any detractors? (veronica comes to mind)
how long until we might read something about what is going on in the elected board's court challenge?
Has a new letter from Blunt been submitted by Blunt?
sorry so nosy.

Kojoe Sullivan has no allies. He thinks the union is his friend but they can't help him. Everyone says Veronica never deals with anyone at the district anymore. Some said she never has dealt with Sullivan. It seems everyone wants nothing to do with either board. Maybe the state will do a complete takeover.

Where is the video of the meeting? Did anyone show up?

It's certainly NOT TRUE that no one wants to enteract with either the Elected or Appointed Board.
We have presented solutions in the form of Career and Educational training for all our children that is currently undergoing assessment by the St. Louis Public Schools in the form of Harriet Tubman High School and Career.
Our Community is dying for the lack of education and jobs training.
We interact with both Boards.
Richard Gaines is to be respected by those of us who have witnessed; as We attend all Board Meetings-

Monroe give us a break. You want something. You seem to be a good man and one of the few people that follow both boards. Gaines is a fool. He is the new Bill Purdy.

Yes you are 100% right that Bill Monroe "Wants Something" and that is the success of Harriet Tubman High School -A Community Based Career Academy & High School that has been submitted as a Business Proposal to Provide Contracted Services to the St. Louis Public School District.
Yes I want Something-Something that may present the greatest CRIME FIGHTING SOLUTION EVER-

I am completely baffled by Antonio's lack of follow-up on whatever the heck is going on at slps.
My best guess is that there are so many other things going on, that there is no time.
Any clues about what happened at the Downs/Gaines forum, which you moderated? Was it too dull and inconsequential to even mention?
This letter appeared in the pd this morning.
Does anyone know what Sullivan's staus is at this point---didn't a democrat senator warn about doing something before September 19th?
Under whose authority is Rick Sullivan acting as CEO of the St. Louis Public Schools? Though the governor's website contains a press release announcing Mr. Sullivan's appointment on March 22, well before the end of the regular session of the Missouri Legislature on May 12, Mr. Sullivan regularly is referred to as a "recess appointment" because the Special Administrative Board took control of the district on June 15. When the state Senate convened in special session in August, Mr. Sullivan's appointment was not taken up for approval, as required by the Missouri constitution.Advertisement
In fact, on Aug. 29, the governor sent a letter to the Senate withdrawing Mr. Sullivan from consideration. Some light could have been shed on this question at the Sept. 19 meeting of the St. Louis Public School Parent Assembly, at which Mr. Sullivan long had been scheduled to speak. Twenty minutes into the meeting, however, the moderator informed the assembled parents that Mr. Sullivan was unable to attend. This is a repeat of his performance at the May meeting of the same assembly, when he was a no-show.
As a parent of two children in the district, I have received dozens of automated phone calls and mailings over the past months informing me that parental involvement is the key to successful schools. The governor's machinations with Mr. Sullivan's appointment and Mr. Sullivan's repeated failure to meet with district parents make a mockery of the idea. Will we ever hear any straight talk from the governor, and will the parents of the district ever see our appointed/unappointed CEO face-to-face?
