City Voters, Check Those Mailboxes!

By Antonio D. French

Filed Friday, August 31, 2007 at 10:45 AM

Within the next seven days, all City of St. Louis registered voters will receive a very important mailing from the City of St. Louis Board of Election Commissioners. The postcard-style mailing will include a permanent voter notification card, information about the respective voter’s registration, and important election information for 2008.

This "voter canvass" is mandatory, according to State law, and it provides each voter with an opportunity to ensure that he or she is properly registered under the correct name and at the correct address. In addition, under current State law, the voter notification card can be cut out and used as identification at the polling places when the voter requests a ballot.

I got mine a couple of days ago. Does this mean we will no longer get a notice right before each election?

Voters will still get a postcard notification prior to each election.

If I had not seen a news story about this prior to receiving the cheaply made postcard (card isn't perforated, you must cut it out with scissors)this would of gone in the trash like all my junk mail! I predict most recipients of this card will toss it in the trash without seeing the registration card!

This 'voter canvass' implementing a PERMANENT VOTER ID is one of the dirty tricks used by Republicans to minimize voter turnout in primarily democratic areas. Be very wary of any permanent ID requirement; the state has no right to demand this. The right of suffrage is supreme. Watch; right at the 2008 elections--most african-american voters will be turned away with the officials claiming some sort of problem with the ID. Read about this on Greg Palast. com. He uncovers the trickery involved in this movement.

Mr. White, Missouri law requires that the voter canvass be done every two years. Also, the oversized postcard clearly indicates the other forms of identification that are acceptable at the polls--also according to Missouri law.

Mr. White,

It's always a plot by the republicans, isn't it? We put instructions prominently on the page and just hope the democrats are too lazy or stupid to follow the law...

I would argue people like you are the problem...you just assume your compatriots are ignorant and stupid. Republicans expect democrats to be (reasonably ;-)) intelligent, loyal, opposition...

While it may be Missouri law that such 'canvass' activities are required--it is not constitutional! I do NOT assume that the voters are ignorant--but I also realize that mail can be misdirected, or potential voters could miss the opportunity by being out of town. I experienced this myself, when as a St. Louis County resident--I had MY residency questioned. Before you make blanket assumptions about RESPONSIBILITY, you should realize that stories of such trickery have been reported on BBC Newsnight. If you have a driver's license; then you have adequate ID. This canvass is used to PURGE voters from registered lists. It mainly occurs in predominantly democratic wards. I had been informed by the County Board of Election Commissioners that if I had forgotten to return this 'postcard'--my name would have been permanently purged even though tax record (property tax) indicated where I lived. This is not a legitimate technique to verify residency--it IS A PLOY TO PURGE VOTERS FROM VOTING LISTS. Why do you have a problem with GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY CWE Guy? I don't care what you think--the PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW. I WOULD URGE THOSE CONCERNED WITH VOTER NULLIFICATION TECHNIQUES TO REFERENCE GREG PALAST'S ARTICLES ON THIS SUBJECT. TIME TO RECLAIM DEMOCRACY FOR ALL OF US--NOT MERELY THE TONY CWE RESIDENTS! You may take that as a swipe CWE Guy. Have a nice day.

Thank you. Every day is a good day.

I'm sorry. I just don't have a problem with having to prove that I am who I say I am and that I am eligible to vote in my district.

All citizens have a right to vote. Nobody has a right to vote fraudulently. St. Louis' history of dogs and dead people registering to vote prove to me we need to keep an eye on our voter rolls.

By the way, we live in a Republic--not a Democracy. We should all be thankful for that.
