Villa Raises $500

By Antonio D. French

Filed Friday, July 13, 2007 at 7:03 AM

State Representative and likely State Senate candidate Tom Villa raised just $500 last quarter, well below the amount expected to be shown by his chief rival, State Rep. Rodney Hubbard*.

According to campaign finance reports filed yesterday, Villa received just one contribution last quarter, $500 from the Missouri Rental Dealers Association on June 25. That is the same day the southside Democrat filed papers authorizing his State Rep campaign committee to raise funds for his State Senate bid.

After spending $2,538.19, Villa was left with just $27,280.44.

Meanwhile, Hubbard's report, which is expected to be filed sometime Monday, is rumored to show more than $100,000 raised.

I'm still voting for Villa. Hubbard's $100,000 could be from the voucher and scholarship tax-credit crowd.

Carl Bearden just left the State House to become a lobbyist for such groups. It is becoming personally profitable to promote taxpayer-funded private and parochial education.

All of this leads voters to question just how much and how often are votes bought and sold.

Tom Villa stays in touch with his constituency and seeks their opinions on issues. The fact he doesn't have so much outside money in his coffers may be to his advantage.

Sorry, Antonio, the better man and the most open and straightforward man in my opinion is Tom Villa. He also recognizes most or the majority of hi constiuency is pro-life.

Issues, not race, are at stake.

Rodney $100,000 will pay for more doors to be knocked, more mailers to be sent out , and more calls to be made. $27,000 in the bank wont win you a senate seat. If you dont have the money to run I hope you have an excited volunteer base. It seems Villa is lacking both at the moment. I wonder how many of Villa's planned consistuency (senate district) agree with his stance on sex education??

I do and so do many, many others. We're tired of parents' responsibilities being shifted to government.

And don't forget how much money was put into Slay's candidates for school board and were defeated by grassroots involvement.

One other thought, there are many Bosnians in the ditrict. Bosnians are Muslims. Their view of sex education is more stringent than any Catholic or Protestant point of view.

Muslims are a force to be reckoned with, and their holy book forbids sex outside of marriage (with the penalty of death) and homosexual behavior (also with the penalty of death).

Best leave sex education to families and houses of worship.

If Rodney would do something to expand tax credits from rehabs, then I think he would find many supporters . I would think that Hubbard has more vision than to simply deliver a Walgreen's for the North Side.

Rodney will need a least $50 grand to buy Jones out of the race as a consultant.

If she stays in Villa won't need more than $27,000.

I would also like to add that I don't think the Rs in Jeff City like Rodney for reaching across the aisle. I think they like him because he has crossed over the aisle. He is buyable and wouldn't they love an urban black Democrat to vote for their garbage and then say "if it's so bad why would a black urban Democrat go along with it?".

Do you really give a chairmanship to a guy you respect, or to a guy you can control. Think about it.

Just say Villa and people know the name already, and that name is synomous with quality in St. Louis.

Villa is not at all an underdog in this race, and anyone that thinks he is does not know how politics work.

Key mistakes have already been made in one candidate's campaign from the onset from a public relations standpoint, and you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Hubbard's most recent fundraiser invitation: No union bug on envelope, no union bug on inviatation. No paid for discolsure on envelope, no paid for disclosure on invitation, no paid for disclosure on ticket.

Maybe he should use some of his $100,000 to hire somebody who can show him the rules of campaign finance disclosures.
