Democratic dominance of the African American vote is perpetuated in part by the notion that all blacks are Democrats. Dogan's Republican candidacy in a lily-white GOP bastion (Note: You NEVER see Democrats nominating an African American candidate for alderman in 90%+ white wards in south St Louis that are overwhelmingly Democratic), together with the fact that it is the Greens, not Democrats, who are taking the lead in challenging Democrat Slay's misplaced priorities in lead abatement (just as it was the Greens who led the charge protecting the city against medical waste incineration), help illustrate that there are other choices available to African Americans. In the past, Democrats' response to high profile non-Democratic public figures (e.g., Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Clarence Thomas, Ken Blackwell) has been to heap ridicule upon them. But if more non-Democratic choices keep appearing, Democrats may actually need to begin trying to actually earn black votes.
