Travel Log: Cape Girardeau

By Antonio D. French

Filed Wednesday, June 06, 2007 at 1:34 PM

As I sit here blogging in a Panera Bread in southeast Missouri, I'm looking across at a man sitting with his girlfriend at a nearby table.

He's wearing a sleeveless white t-shirt with a large red and blue Confederate Flag across the back. Above it reads, "If you're offended by this shirt..." Below it concludes, "then you don't know your history."

Welcome to Cape Girardeau, MO.

Don't ask why I'm here. Just rest assured in the same knowledge that keeps me from walking over to the next table to play Principal Joe Clark to this misinformed youth; I will be home in a few hours.

That shit wouldn't even fly at USC which is a notoriously conservative campus.

Limbaugh law firm on North Kingshighway?!? Looks like "gentrification". Or "there goes the neighborhood" depending on your point of view.

It reminds me of a store I visited in Wright City a while back. As I paid for my items, I noticed a printout of "You might be a redneck if..." sayings on which it said that "redneck" should be changed to "American". According to the list, I must not actually be an American, because I found a number of the items pretty offensive.

I wish you had not posted this.

I have a degree in elementary education from semo.

The actions of the state board have tempted me to burn it in a protest (I doubt I will ever teach again, anyway).

I had decided not to, but now..............

I wonder if any redneck bikers playing their toby Keith shit so loud it drowns out their revved up motorcycles have had to pay that 500 dollar fine.

NO, NO, kjoe, don't burn your degree! You can teach anywhere in Missouri - teach in city schools! Teach in the inner ring!

Southern Missouri scares me and I'm a white girl originally from Rolla. We were driving around the Sam Baker State Park area a couple of years ago and noticed the confederate flags flying in front yards. I thought "if this *Honda* minivan breaks down, we're dead meat. I'm gonna have to drop back to my accent..."

I second that! I'd rather camp in, say, Wellston than down there.

But it just highlights how schizophrenic Missouri is: urban-rural, North-South, East-West, Dem.-Rep..... We're lucky that no matter what you believe, we can find a spot in this state to be with others like you. Self-segregation, and most everyone respects boundaries.

That said, Cape is a very lovely place to visit, and it's a snapshot smorgasboard, as Antonio has proven.
Thanks for the tour.
