Suicide Attempt in City Hall

By Antonio D. French

Filed Friday, June 01, 2007 at 2:37 PM

A woman tried to jump from the second floor rotunda of City Hall today. City Marshals would not comment on the record, but witnesses tell PubDef the woman, an employee in one of St. Louis' county offices, was upset at being reprimanded at work this morning.

Witnesses say two people, one of them 4th Ward Alderman Sam Moore, helped pull the struggling woman back from the ledge before Marshals apprehended her.

When I arrived at 9:45am this morning I saw an ambulance out front but nothing major happening inside the rotunda.

I'm no suicide expert but I think someone would need to jump from a higher place to do themselves in ---the distance from the 2nd floor just isn't that great.

Maybe it was a cry for help. Or maybe she was just trying to get on paid leave for a while.

Goodness, a two-floor drop to a marble floor will crush most peoples' skulls. I recall the result some 30 years ago when a woman dropped to the purple-granite floor of the brand-new Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis (hitting the granite escalator jambs as well). They had to put glass shields up on the walkways after that.

The pressures that these jobs put upon us who are just trying to make it, is sometimes hard to bear. I can imagine her frustration of making it all the way to work even late and being made to feel substandard even inferior because she was late. I've been there and am so sorry for her. It's not that serious!
