As expected, State Rep. Fred Kratky has resigned. Labels: Election_Board, State_House
According to an email obtained by PubDef.net, written from St. Louis City Elections Director Scott Leiendecker to the Governor's Office, Kratky resigned "on or about Friday, June 29."
We reported last week that Kratky, who resides in the City of St. Louis, had been making moves to try to ensure his wife, Michele, received the nomination to succeed him.
Leiendecker is concerned about the timing of the required special election and any additional cost to city taxpayers.
"I am asking at the request of the Chairman of the Board [of Elections] Carol Ann Wilson that if a special election is to be called prior to the August 2008 Election that it would be called on February 5, 2008," wrote Leiendecker.
"At that time the City of St. Louis as well as the State of Missouri will already be holding an election set for the Presidential Preferential Primary. This combination will in fact save time and cost for the City of St. Louis Election Board as well as the city taxpayers," he wrote.
Leiendecker estimates calling a special election anytime before that date could cost taxpayers approximately $50,000.

Naral considers him anti-choice?
He has a 100 percent record from NEA, and an f from the NRA.

I wonder if it bothers him that there would be one less democratic representative for more than 7 months. Maybe Jay Nixon and Matt Blunt should each donate 25,000 dollars each from their campaign coffers to hold the election, because I am sure that they are united in the belief that people whould have representation.

The governor called a special election in September to replace a (Republican) Senator from St. Charles. Why are (Democratic) city voters less worthy of representation? Will the governor screw city voters again?

The City could save even more money but not even holding an election and making Michelle Kratky her husband's successor.
Frankly, it's Fred bowing out early for the wife's ensured win who is screwing the voters. A largely Democratic electorate in Kratky's district will have no choice in picking a Dem successor.

so readers of this blog go ballistic when voters are disenfranchised in the school board elections but the voters in southwest St. Louis are to be left without representation in Jefferson City because Michelle Kratky wants to run for office? Seems a little hypocritical to me.

The 7 months reference is a bit misleading. The legislature will be out of session for most of that period, and not much happens in January, when it is in session. Gov. Holden did the city a greater disservice when he delayed the special election to replace Pat Dougherty in the 67th, when the legislature WAS in session, a few years back.
Is the "save money" issue a red herring? Mayor Slay should show some leadership and weigh in on this. From the standpoint of the city, is it worth $50,000 of the city government's money to get another Dem vote a little earlier?

This smacks of a "royalty" secession. American democracy and politics are not supposed to promote relatives and/or blood.
Perhaps Lacey Clay should step down and let his wife or whomever take over!

Does Fred think she is the best for the job, or do they just need to keep that paycheck going into the Kratky household?
Save the City $50,000 and stick to the process.

I am missing something very obvious to everyone else, here.
What are the differences between finding a new senator September 4, and finding a new state rep, but waiting 7 months?

Gov. Matt Blunt today called for a special election to fill the vacancy in the 23rd Senate District. The special election will be held on Sept. 4, 2007.
Republican Sen. Chuck Gross resigned from the Missouri State Senate effective May 31, creating an open Senate seat in the 23rd Senate District.

Did someone mention the Clay family in a post knocking the Kratkys about royalty succession? Hah!
