In what has become an almost annual event, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen today passed another resolution asking the State of Missouri to return to the City of St. Louis control of its police department. Labels: Board_of_Aldermen, Police
Click here to read Alderman Terry Kennedy's resolution, which passed 22-1.
In this video from February 2006, Kennedy talked to PubDef.net about the need for local control.

I agree completely. I would hope that our Aldermen would take this a little further. A resolution asking is not enough.

The aldermen have taken this issue as far as they can.
We now need our state legislators, city residents, county residents, STL media, and everyone interested in seeing the city move forward to pressure the state to bring about this long overdue change.
Amen Alderman Kennedy.

Could someone explain to me why the state won't let us control our own police department?
It's not the wild wild west anymore...

Who was the lone dissenting vote, Heitert?

"Could someone explain to me why the state won't let us control our own police department?"
As the state board of education pointed out----st. louis voters cannot be trusted to govern their own affairs.

Yeah, but it was cool when we were the wild wild west...
...armies camped out at the land where SLU sits...
...barroom brawls in the "bloody third ward"...
...hookers and gamblers walking the streets...
No more "wild wild west"? Wait a minute...maybe we still are?

I thought we were a "Southern" state.

22-1? Yeah, I want to know who the one vote was and I want to know who the five people that either were not present or managed to duck out of the chambers to avoid having to vote on record.

The one was Steve Conway, who engaged in a "spirited" debate against the resolution on the chamber floor with 1st Ward Alderman Charles Q. Troupe.

The one no vote was Kirner, alderwoman in the 25th ward

ok the same board and mayor that wanted the State take over of the School Board now want the police department back under control of the City voters. Hmmmmm it's been over 100 years. Hmmmmm I wonder how long before the voters get back control of their School district now 100+ years?
See how hard it is to get control back once you lose it.

Slay doesn't want local control of the police, or the slps, and he is supporting exurban developer Paul McKee, because he needs rural republican support for higher statewide office.
