In the face of the looming takeover of St. Louis Public Schools by the State of Missouri, the school district announced yesterday that it will offer free summer school to any Missouri student that applies to its program. Labels: Schools
According to the district, eleven thousand students have already registered for the summer school program, and that number is expected to grow.
"Students will benefit from smaller class sizes, effective curriculum materials, and more individualized instruction – all of which contribute to a strong academic program," says SLPS Superintendent Diana Bourisaw.
Also according to the press release, the program has been structured to meet the goals of both "No Child Left Behind" and the district's own Comprehensive School Improvement Plan.
Transportation will be provided for resident students as usual, while non-resident parents must arrange transportation for their children.

So let me get this straight: SLPS won't foot the bill to transport the city students for whom they are responsible to decent schools in the county next year, but they will pay to staff summer school classrooms for county students who don't need them and aren't directly their responsbility anyway??? Thank goodness it's unlikely that anyone outside of the city would actually choose to "take advantage" of this offer...

The SLPS will foot the bill for any students who choose to go to a County school that will accept them--they have to.

Sorry, by "won't foot the bill" I meant "will work in cahoots with the county schools, who also don't want to educate these kids, to ensure that it won't have to foot the bill." My bad. :)

it is p.r. fluff.
Perhaps if this was done in the past few years to demonstrate that the Administration actually cared........

I think this unaccreditation thing is a hoax. Once the 3 man board takes control, (and probably dumps Bourisaw) they will ask the state to reconsider accreditation, and they will give whoever these 3 people are exactly what they want. Because these three people have the "right " political connections. The 7 member board does not.
And make no mistake about it---laws, regulations, proper procedures do not mean a damned thing. This takeover bunch has already proven they can and will do anything they want to.
