Education and school quality are two of the most talked about issues in St. Louis these days, especially in the wake of the Show-Me Institute's somewhat controversial poll, released May 7, concerning school vouchers in Missouri. Labels: Schools
In related news, six St. Louis High Schools announced today that they will seek independent accreditation with the North Central Association – Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA). The applying schools are Beaumont, Carnahan, Clyde C. Miller Career Academy, Gateway I.T., Northwest Transportation and Law Academy, and Vashon.
“NCA accreditation is recognized across state lines, which not only eases the transfer process as students move from accredited school to accredited school, but also assures parents that the school is meeting regionally and nationally accepted standards for quality and successful professional practice... This is the accreditation standard that most colleges and universities rely upon when admitting students," said SLPS Superintendant Diana Bourisaw, in a statement released to the press.
Six other St. Louis High Schools are already accredited with the NCA: Central VPA, Cleveland @ Pruitt NJROTC, Metro, Roosevelt, Soldan, and Sumner.

I think this is a good idea.

What does the nca measure? What are its criteria? Just curious.
I also think it is a good idea to get independent/non-government bodies weighing in on the condition of the schools.

Perhaps the NCA should look at ALL the SLPSS schools as an independent and unbiased evaluator. Schools that don't measure up could be given CONSTRUCTIVE advice on how to reach independent accreditation within the NCA. Following this, the attorneys could take Slay, Blunt, Smith, & the legislature to court for prejudicial conspiracy to defraud the public. NCA has no political agenda; the state does. Time to 'HANG 'EM HIGH.'

Yesterday, the pd made another mindless attack on the slps---criticizing them for asking other schools not to accept the transfers which would come in the event of loss of accreditation.
If the 7 member board continues to operate, that would mean slps did not lose accreditation. The action they are taking could only affect---and possible help---the takeover board.
The independent accreditation thing is good, but will probably cause an underlying resentment with dese as the Bourisaw appeal is considered.
I cannot imagine how forlorn a task it is to do everything possible to help those who are unfairly taking away your power to act.
It certainly was not the way Williams left town.

The standards are on the NCA website.
