Mayor Still Fighting for Charter Power

By Antonio D. French

Filed Thursday, May 17, 2007 at 5:02 PM

JEFFERSON CITY – Mayor Francis Slay and his aides are still fighting to get the power to open more charter schools in St. Louis.

While a bill that would give the mayor to power to sponsor new charters has not moved since it was introduced earlier this year, the same language has found itself into at least two bills during these final days of the legislation.

But the out-of-town sponsors of those bills were quickly informed by St. Louis Senator and Minority Floor Leader Maida Coleman that that language would mean a fight on the senate floor — one that would likely mean death to their bills during these final hours.

While Coleman fights against the measure in the senate chamber, Slay's Education Liaison Robyn Wahby is lobbying for the measure in the halls. And to add to the fray, Byron Clemens and Ray Cummings of the St. Louis teachers union today joined the fight to kill the language.

With only hours left before the end of session, will the Mayor's hopes be thwarted, or will the charter bandwagon keep rolling?

Looks the mayor is already getting what he wants: now the state board of education is chartering public schools in the City for him.

Until children in the city of St. Louis can receive a high quality, free education, the fight will continue.

I wish that was true.

This is a fight to bring a lower quality alternative which is not subject to the standards expected of the schools by---who else---the same dese which wants to sponsor one of these schools.

50-1 student teacher ratios in math classes will save the taxpayers some money.

50-1 student teacher ratios in any class will save the taxpayers some money...for a year or two. Then it will cost dearly in ways that can't be calculated so easily.

Antonio, there is a big story going down in the schools with regards to teacher displacements occuring in the last couple of days. And no substitutes.

Any teachers out there want to share?

Slay just wants to fully resegragate the schools so he can have an elite all white school system for those of his ilk and an inferior minority school system!

Star Jones seems to hate Slay and O'Brien. Star Jones don't be so negative. Slay is getting more than what he wants and he is going to get more.

Time to begin RECALL PETITIONS ON SLAY. He lobbied to disenfranchise the voters. This is unforgiveable. He hid behind 'helping the children,' while he denied their parents the right to vote. In any other setting he would already be gone and prosecuted for malfeasance. Possibly even for conspiracy to deny basic civil rights to citizens who happen to disagree. His neo-Nazi credentials are showing.

So somebody start one. Strong statements on a blog do absolutely nothing in the real world.

I don't know why Christine bertelson is no longer going to be in charge of the post dispatch editorial page---maybe the money people want someone more centrist.

But her editorial page has been almost vicious towards the slps starting with the removal of Floyd Irons last summer.

I do not know about recalls, but less docile media coverage of the Mayor and his posse is needed.
