The Fire Shooter

By Antonio D. French

Filed Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at 9:00 AM

Late at night, while you are sleeping, St. Louis burns. Armed with a scanner, a couple of cameras, and nostrils full of smoke and ash, 20 year-old Ben Mazanec of south St. Louis spends his free time tracking down the flames.

We need to keep an eye on this kid because oftentimes people that have a fixation with fires end up setting fires to pacify the adrenalin rush thay derive from being in close proximity to fires!

I'm confused. Is this guy an arsonist or just a wannabe fire fighter? Good video though. Interesting.

Cool. The kid has a dream. I'm glad people still aspire to be firefighters.

So what? What makes this goofy looking douche bag any better than the next guy taking pictures at a fire? NOTHING. The tard couldn't even pass the EMT class. How dumb can you get? Probably out at night chasing a garage fire or video taping E-7 backing into their station instead of doing a couple ride-alongs.

"The smoke does really cool stuff. Comes out in clouds, plumes, whatever. Fires just a bonus. Hu-huh-huh."

This kind of tool is just what St. Louis City DOESN'T need. They have enough idiots that don't know how to apply a band-aid or turn on some oxygen riding a pumper. But hey, what do I know? 'School's just not his thang'. How does he think he will make it through the academy if school isn't his "thing."

Theres nothing wrong with doing what he does... [Taking pictures at fires.] Nothing at all. But when you try to be a know it all, when you're a know nothing, you go too far.

"It was obviously an arson."
He doesnt know if these fires were arson. He's not a trained arson investigator. Unless... maybe he knows something the FD doesn't.

Basically, it's toolboxes like him that will get decent people in trouble. And like someone else posted, I wonder if he hasn't set a few for his own personal gain.

(Remember the city fire explorer that got caught torching a couple houses a few months ago just to have "something to do"?)

I just think this guy needs to get his act together before he gets hurt or gets into trouble. If he wants to be a firefighter, thats great. They could use some good people. But he needs to ditch the camera and put his nose in the books. Because all the fire pictures and t-shirts in the world wont make you a firefighter. School work will.
