Lexington Elementary forth grader Jimaniqua Baldwin has won a trip to New York City to perform in the America Scores National Poetry Slam at the HBO Theater on April 30. She will recite her poem "I Remember."

McKinley Classical Junior Academy student Mohamad Syed Ahmad won the district’s National Geographic Bee. Mohamad finished eleventh in the state-level competition, which was held in Columbia, MO on March 30.

Speaking of McKinley CJA, the school's chess team was crowned co-champions in the 6th grade and under division of the 2007 Missouri Junior High/Elementary Chess Championship. In the individual category, student Rio Pimentel is co-champion in the 6th grade and under division.

This just goes to show you what a caring parent that pushes her children, and what the children who heed the parent can accomplish.

Determination and caring can accomplish much.

The structural inequalities act as constraints upon the individual aspirations of the low income, especially the ghetto poor. This is an exception and definitely not the norm. The way to fix the SLPS issue is by addressing the competitive disadvantage that poor districts, including the SLPS, have in terms of attracting good teachers and allocating funds due to the property tax. This can be fixed through regional governance and revenue sharing. The entire region needs to understand that the investing in the disadvantage is a long term benefit, although short term cost as well as removal of some local political controls. Our region as a whole cannot compete with failing districts and entire segments who can only qualify for slave wage service sector jobs, or those those who turn to the alternative economy.
