Debate Video: On Illegal Yard Signs

By Antonio D. French

Filed Monday, February 26, 2007 at 11:23 AM

At last nights debate between the candidates for President of the Board of Aldermen, a question from the audience asked Alderman Lewis Reed why his yard signs can be seen on so many trees in north St. Louis.

Reed's opponent, incumbent Pres. Jim Shrewsbury said his campaign never puts signs in illegal locations. But directly across the street from the debate site, a 4-foot by 8-foot Shrewsbury sign could be seen standing on city land in Fairgrounds Park.

Fairgrounds is located in the 21st Ward, whose alderman, Bennice Jones-King, and committeeman, "Chink" Washington, have broken from every other northside ward to endorse Shrewsbury.

Good handiwork. Steal Shrewsbury sign. Place it in park. Record footage. Remove sign to place somewhere else and record more footage.

The above is correct and maybe an overzelous suppporter put one in the wrong place, like the one in Lafayette Square. BUT, generally, infact, in most cases Shrewsbury signs are only where they have permission.

Contrast that to the Reed signs that are on more vacant lots, on trees and abandoned buildings than probably any other candidate in St. Louis political history. BNB

Speaking of campaign signs, does anyone know where the slogan on Shrewbury's signs, "Creating Common Ground", came from?

It's a great phrase. Very powerful. Who deserves the credit for attaching it to the campaign?

What does it mean? Can you give some examples?

Wow, Antonio! Great scoop you landed here. This illegal yard sign thing will probably put the Reed campaign back into the thick of things. You're really earning your dough.

BTW, ever think that sign was maybe just put up for visibility for the debate and intended to be taken down after the event's conclusion?

I have a Shrewsbury sign in my yard (I got it from a neighbor), and Shrewsbury personally thanked me and said he wanted the signs in the yards of real people. This is a few weeks ago. I asked about the huge Reed signs at gas stations, and Shrewsbury said he didn't know what the connection was, but that he didn't want signs all over except in people's yards.

I guess all the Reed signs in the 12th and 23rd Wards, , were put there illegally? Without permission? I doubt it!!!

They look like real people with real yards to me! And they are everywhere!

Putting yard signs at businesses, in front yards, and otherother private property is all fine...as long as they come down after the election.

I saw a rather large Shrewsbury sign at Joe Vaccaro's Gas $ Car Wash, as well as 2 large signs at a Plaza at MLK and Sarah. Seems contradictory.

I see illegally placed Shrewsbury and Kacie Tripplet signs all over town. They are mostly in medians and on abandoned property.
