State education officials will hold a public meeting in St. Louis next Tuesday evening, Jan. 30, to hear comments from St. Louis residents about the St. Louis Public Schools. Labels: Schools
The meeting will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Harris-Stowe State University, in the main auditorium of the Givens Administration Building, 3026 Laclede Ave.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is conducting the meeting to provide an opportunity for parents, employees and other concerned citizens to express their views about the status of the St. Louis Public Schools and the possibility of state intervention in the district’s operations.
The meeting will be conducted by Dr. Bert Schulte, deputy commissioner of education; Dr. Charles Brown, assistant commissioner of the department of education; and Dr. Robert Taylor, DESE's representative in the St. Louis area.
Those who wish to speak at the meeting will be asked to register when they arrive and to limit their remarks to three minutes. Written comments also will be accepted.

If there is a way, I hope someone drives home the point that if there is to be a 3 member board chosen to run the slps, then Matt Blunt and Mayor Slay are two of the worst people possible to give the appointment power to. There have to be other possible choices.

It would be nice to have a big turnout at this meeting.
It would also be nice to see this announced via every media outlet.

Anony 1, there is no point to that. The law says the people holding their positions get to make the appointments. It's a done deal, if the state takes over, they get to choose.

I think the point is that because Blunt and Slay are ignorant about educating kids, there should be no State takeover. It would be different if Horace Mann was our Governor.

The point is that this is the forum where we have been given the right to express our opinions. Anon#1, I hope you and anyone else who has an opinion regarding this issue takes the opportunity to express them. This is the time we have been given to do so. If you don't feel comfortable speaking, please come and support those that do. This is extremely important, most of us have expressed that we would like an opportunity to have a "voice" in this decision. This is your chance. If you don't at least show up to this meeting then I suggest you keep quiet when all the decisions are made for you.

That's right-this is it people. Many have expressed that they would like to have this opportunity. Those that did, especially parents have a duty to attend this meeting. If you don't want to speak at least attend, and stand up to support the statements of others that you agree with. Each of us as an individual can make a difference here. An individual turns into many and many is a force to be reckoned with. We have been accused of being a small group who are composed of the same old regulars. Each and every parent, teacher, administrator, PTO rep etc must find no excuse for missing this meeting. Your kids are counting on you.
