President's Race Finances

By Antonio D. French

Filed Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 11:39 PM

According to his latest campaign finance report, Alderman Lewis Reed outraised his incumbent opponent, Aldermanic Pres. Jim Shrewsbury, in the period since October 1st. During that period, Reed raised $117,105 compared to Shrewsbury's $84,650.

Reed also loaned his campaign an additional $88,000, bringing his total cash contributions to $205,105.

But dollars left the campaign just as fast as they came in. The report shows the Reed campaign spending $113,626.78 during the same period. As of Jan. 20, the campaign showed $92,978.22 cash on hand, compared to Shrewsbury's $238,824.99.

Reed's contributors included former mayor Freeman Bosley, Jr. and his law firm, License Collector Mike McMillan, Aldermen Dionne Flowers, Jennifer Florida and Stephen Gregali, the Gateway Classic's Earl Wilson, several entities of the Lawrence Group, the Urban League's James Buford, and Committeewoman Bev Buchheit.

*Reed is a client of A.D. French & Associates and his report reflects payments totaling $4,000 to ADF&A and Pub Def for website design, advertising, video production, photography, print design, and general consulting

"...report reflects payments totaling $4,000 to ADF&A"

That certainly helps to explain how Reed blew through $113,000 and still no one knows who he is!

I agree with the first poster. Mr Reed's numbers are just as he got into the race. President Shrewsbury's show a steady stream of financial support from the last year or so. As noted in the article, Shrewsbury has money, and not his own but from supporters, to finish out this campaign in great shape. He is still raising funds.

He also has real solid endorsements that he can build on come March. He works hard and gives in to no one. He is going to win and this report shows he is in the right position to do so!!!

What's with the flood of blog entries this morning on pubdef?

Talk about burying the lead.

**Reed is NOT a client of Anonymous

President Shrewsbury has a great chance of wining because Lewis Reed has a bonafied rookie running his campaign.

The rookie is Bob Rice and everybody knows that he is using this campaign as a golden opportunity to learn how to run a campaign for future jobs with Vigilant Communications. This shows that Lewis Reed is not serious about winning this race. People are not going to give great contributions to a guy that everyone is talking about having a rookie running his campaign.

The race may be over and Jim Shrewsbury may very well win due to poor decisions on Lewis Reed's part. If you can't make good decisions of who to choose to manage your own campaign, then how can people believe that you will make good decisions managing 28 members of the Board of Alderman. Managing 28 members of the Board of Alderman is no cup of tea. Think about it!

Shrewsbury will raise unbelievable amounts of money now that it is clear that Lewis Reed can't raise enough money as he goes against a tough incumbent. Shrewsbury will undoubtedly turn up the heat on Lewis Reed and his rookie campaign manager, and the rookie campaign manager will make rookie mistakes leading to rookie ending. Lewis Reed has to make a decision between trying to become the President of the Board of Alderman or trying to give rookie Bob Rice an opportunity at the expense of himself. Easy choice that needs a tough man to make it!!!!!!!!

Yard signs, caterers, over-paid staff - $113,626.78

Loans to himself - $88,000

The thought of Lewis Reed on the City’s Board of Estimate and Apportionment - SCARY!

With each candidate receiving donations from Blairmont, it's once again a choice between the lesser of evils. Frankly, I'll just forgo making a choice, since I'd end up regreting a vote for either of these two.

The same posts by the same people on two different websites. Seems that the Shrewsbury people have a lot of time on there hands.

I wonder what those guys in Shrewsbury's office behind those LOCKED doors get paid nearly $300,000 to do. Its certainly not the people's busy. Isn't campaigning on city time and from a city building illegal?!?!?

Why has Reed dumped $5,975 into the 6th Ward Democratic Organization? Shouldn't that money flow be the other way around? What/Who is he buying?

-Doug

Did you think Reed and Shrewsbury would not take money from a developer?

Watchdog,

What do you mean "locked door"? Thanks for the clarification.

Sounds like both candidates are doing well in the fundraising department. May the best man win.
