'Dumping' Story Makes the Post

By Antonio D. French

Filed Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at 2:12 AM

Little over a week ago Old Norther Michael Allen, co-blogger at Ecology of Absence, witnessed what he thinks was a "dumping" of a homeless man at a downtown shelter by suburban cops.

He wrote an email to MayorSlay.com (aka Richard Callow) describing the incident and Callow -- er, Mayor Slay posted about it on his blog. And in today's Post, they write about Callow writing about what Allen wrote about, which may not have been what Allen thought he was writing about. Whew!

City Resident and activist Douglas Duckworth was driving his Buick, with fellow Citizen-Leaders Michael Allen and Claire Nowak-Boyd, when this alleged violation occurred at approximately 11 PM as Michael Allen described.

The individual in question fit the general appearance of the homeless. Given Mayor Slay's constant complaints about homeless dumping Downtown by County authorities, we assumed this was what we were witnessing.

Maybe we were wrong, yet there is a definite homeless problem Downtown while our County neighbors are not doing their part. Individuals shouldn't have to come Downtown for a free meal. Charity services and rehabilitation for the entire Region's homeless is beyond the capacity of the City of St. Louis. It is simply bad policy to expect our City, which has the precedent of an ever eroding tax base, to be the caretaker for this Regional problem. Regional cooperation is in the interest of every municipality.

To further complicate things, the Post reporter who called me somehow thought that Doug Duckworth had sent the e-mail to Callow, and asked for his phone number!

That many important people in one car!!! In a Buick!!! What were you thinking?

Doug, do you really think that anyone in the county is going to help the city? They have been getting away with pillaging for so long that I do not think that they can remember how to help.

Just kidding about the Buick.

Whether or not the guy was homeless, Lucas Park is a curious location to deposit someone at 11pm, and that squad car sure was in a hurry to drive off.
