Green Joins Call for Hearings

By Antonio D. French

Comptroller Darlene Green has joined in the call for public hearings before any state action on St. Louis Public Schools.

"I support the community's call for the State Department of Education to conduct a public hearing on the St. Louis public schools report," said Green in a statement released today.

"With the School Board election just three months away, the state and the committee should consider that a change in board members may be all it takes to end the turmoil. A state takeover, on the other hand, could result in a continuation of the political controversy instead of focusing efforts on what’s best for the children"

"Any of the committee’s recommendations, short of a takeover, need broad public support to be successful. A public hearing on the issue here in St. Louis would go a long way towards doing just that," said Green.

Last week State Rep-elect Jamilah Nasheed sent a letter to the president of the State Board of Education requesting such a public hearing.

Excellent. I pray more leaders come forward and join the call.

Great, now the loudest of both pro-takeover and anti-takeover camps can have a public shouting match. Meanwhile, the vast majority of us fed up with everyone -- all board members, past and present supers, and the many selfish teachers -- we sit quietly at home again.

Interesting. I have never heard her talk about poor education, truancy and dropouts in St. Louis Public Schools, but I guess that would be too much like being a leader. For the highest locally ranked black politician, she always has her finger in the wind before she talks. What a shame.

The previous poster must have selective hearing, doesn't read the daily paper, visit blogs, or does not attend the same meetings/functions where the Comptroller has addressed SLPS issues for years.

If you are fed up with everyone, you ought to stay home. These board members do not walk in lock-step---especially after the voters dumped some of Slay's people.

Williams was not qualified to be the superintendent--no experience---and Roberti was a corporate vulture.

If you cannot differentiate among these people and you think they are all the same---stay home.

You appear to be very misinformed. If you believe many of the teachers are selfish, you are wrong. A few maybe, most of them give and give and then give some more. If you can't distinguish between the board members who are for the children and those who are against, perhaps you should pay closer attention at board meetings. As for the current superintendent, she has done far more in the few months she's been here than Creg William's did in the year he worked to dismember this district. If you believe every slanted word you read in the paper, then I suggest you educate yourself on the issues in a more responsible manner.

What a stupid statement. After all Antonio French has been doing on so many political fronts! This has to be either Veronica O'Brien or Richard Calloway of the Mayor's Office to even utter such a ridiculouis statement.

She would be the first woman and 3rd African American.

When Mcmillan runs for Mayor this could really shake up both the black and female votes.
