The Missouri Republican Party sent out a press release this afternoon attacking State Senator-elect Jeff Smith, a Democrat, on his decision to oppose Gov. Matt Blunt's appointment of Donayle Whitmore-Smith to the State Board of Education. Labels: Party_News, Schools, State_Senate
"Smith today showed that he is more interested in bowing to Democrat Party bosses than doing what’s right for Missouri students," said the Republicans.
"Smith contradicts himself by praising Whitmore-Smith's efforts on behalf of urban education in the St. Louis area then in the same breath rejects her nomination because of a lack of experience," said Paul Sloca, communications director for the Missouri Republican Party.
"Jeff Smith’s politically-motivated rejection of Donayle Whitmore-Smith is a slap in the face to the African American community and to our urban schools. Jeff Smith is turning his back on his constituents in order to garner favor with Democrat leaders who have opposed Whitmore-Smith’s nomination," said Sloca.
"It is this kind of dismissive attitude toward our urban schools that have led to problems like those currently surrounding the St. Louis Public School District. It’s a disgrace."
Meanwhile, Gov. Blunt is also voicing his displeasure with Smith's decision.
"I am deeply disappointed that one of the Senator-elect's first actions is obstructing the appointment of a well-qualified African-American woman who would have done a magnificent job on the State's School Board," said Blunt.
"Donayle Whitmore-Smith was one of two African-American leaders I appointed to the State Board of Education. I am pleased that Reverend Stanley Archie of Kansas City will at least be given the courtesy of a hearing even though the same courtesy was not extended to Donayle."

Good for Jeff! What Democrat WOULD want to be a favorite for Baby Boy Blunt? Matt - Get your own henchman to make the nomination.
My 2007 New Years Song:
To the Left, To the Left
Donayle get yo bags and
move over to the Left.
To the Left, To the Left
Pick up yo bags
and move over to left.

Or how about:
"Jeff is a survivor he's not gone take it. He will survive, he's gonna make it.."
or....
"Baby Blunt you ain't on my mind, so get the hell away from meee..."
or....
"All the legislators if ya hear me, throw your hands up at me"
Better yet, I like anony 2's version:
"To the left, to the left Donyale get yo bags and move to the Left."
Or perhaps Donyale and Baby Blunt and whomever can star in Dreamgirls, since its going to be a "dream" of theirs to pressure elected officials to vote their way instead of the way of the consciece of the elected official and their constituency.

Did Jeff Smith vote his constituency? Let him tell his heavily populated district why the first decision he made as the senator-elect was to drop-kick a well-known and respected black woman.

Jeff Smith's first power base is white liberals. Then Mayor's Office became allied with Jeff Smith. Black vote was split 3 ways. Had Jeff Smith helped Blunt fill up the state education board with creationists, his original power base of white liberals would have never forgiven him. He has to keep his core happy. Also, teaching poor African American kids creationism in science class will not help them get good jobs when they grow up. It was win-win for Jeff.

The Repugs must be worried about Jeff Smith. He hasn't even been sworn in yet, Blunt tries to send him trouble by nominating the voucher lady and now they are criticizing his thoughtful decision to reject Blunt's trap.
Jeff is going to turn the Capitol on its head.

Jeff's first power base is white liberals. Ms. Whitmore is not a creationist. She simply suggested that all sides be presented and let them critically think to determine what they believe. Or, don't we want poor black kids critically thinking about anything that certain groups don't want them to think about. You want them to be scientist but only want them to think one way. Yeah, that is progressive for science. I thought exploration and discovery was sort of the idea, not a cloned thinking model.

I have been in the medical field for 20 years and I never remember anyone asking if I thought man was created or evolved as a means of dealing with everyday situations. Seems more like a purely intellectual discussion rather than truly relevant to real people. Hell, we are here. Now what are we going to do.

Poll: How many people were asked if they believe in creation or evolution as a basis for getting a job? Doctors, nurses, lawyers, politicians, authors, business owners, managers, accountants, engineers please respond.
Or, I wonder if that question would be considered discriminatory because you might not hire someone based on their religion regardless of their qualifications to do the job. Sticky ground Jeff.
Has Mr. Smith ever worked in the real world or just in a idealist college setting?

There is no shortage of creationist nurses, physicians, etc. These days nurses probably make more money than physicians given managed care and shortage of nurses.

Jeff Smith did the right thing for Public education. Those Republicans certainly have tempers, don't they?
It was very low, even for Blunt, to bring race into it.
