VIDEO: Candidates File for Office

By Antonio D. French

Filed Monday, November 27, 2006 at 11:03 AM

UPDATE: There were a few surprises this morning as the filing window opened for incumbents and challengers seeking to run in the March 2007 primary elections.

As we first reported last week, former school board member Bill Haas is challenging 18th Ward Alderman Terry Kennedy. When we asked Haas, who has run unsuccessfully for numerous offices over the years (including mayor and, most recently, state representative), why now alderman, he said simply "it was on the ballot."

Haas added it would be an honor to replace "a great alderman like Terry Kennedy."

The biggest surprise came in the filing of retired police officer Matt Browning against 12th Ward Ald. Fred Heitert. [Click here to read more about this and view a video interview with Browning.] Both are Republicans and Browning's moving personal story and considerable name recognition could make this race very competitive.

Alderman Craig Schmid (20th Ward) also got a challenger in Cherokee Street resident Galen Gondolfi.

In the 6th Ward, Kacie Starr Triplett's name will appear on the ballot above Committeeman Patrick Cacchione and first-time candidate Christian Saller.

Another surprise came in the 4th Ward, where neither incumbent Ald. O.L. Shelton or his expected challenger, Sam Moore, showed up this morning to file. [UPDATE: Shelton filed at 4:30 p.m]

Still Developing...

UPDATE 2: Here are some photos from today's filings. Please don't steal our photos. If you'd like to use them, just ask.

Bill Haas needs to retire to the loony bin.

His former blog is a testimony to his insanity.

Why would he file for Alderman against Kennedy? Does Bill actually have any platform other than committing suicide if he looses?

Really, if you are not serious then do not run. Some people really want to challenge these incumbents. Some are tired of their old ways of doing business, not simply because "it’s available." You are simply making a joke of the electoral process.

To Bill Hass
Alderman Kennedy does not have time to waste on you,and the 18th ward people don't either.

It's nice to see the troops are worried about me; maybe I have a chance after all. I was thinking of maybe withdrawing, but now maybe I just have to win, be a great alderman; it wont shut them up, but it will make them look like the fools that they are, no offense intended. And for every mean comment (which says more about them than it does me, as we all know), I vow to campaign an extra hour. Keep those cards and letters coming. Look for my comments in response to questions from the Argus in their issue this week. The were good questions, and I'm proud of my answers. After the paper is published, presuming the have to edit my remarks, I'll publish them in full here and people can judge for themselves if I'm serious about running and what my platform is.
Peace out, BH

I know this is a little off topic, but we could be looking at an anti-affirmative action ballot initiative in 2008 here in Missouri.
