More than two dozen black elected officials from the City of St. Louis met this morning at the Gateway Classic Foundation to discuss plans for greater organization and cooperation. Labels: Video_Reports
The meeting, organized by Congressman Lacy Clay, Alderman Greg Carter and Committeeman Arthur "Chink" Washington, was an attempt to revive the defunct Council of Black Elected Officials which hasn't met in years.
Sources say the meeting lasted nearly two hours and ended with a pledge to meet again soon -- perhaps in early December -- and possibly elect officers for the organization at a later time.

It will be interesting to see if the black elected officials meet and decide to endorse Lewis Reed.
For blacks to get two out of three votes on E and A could mean big things for north city.

It will be intereting to see Mr. Reed gather more than 1 or 2 southside wards. History has been proven that it takes 2 northside wards to equal 1 southside ward. Besides can't you see that he is another black official being used to keep Shrewsbury at bay. Shrewsbury has been voting with Darlene Green and they don't like it! ( Reed's friend the Mayor)

I am inclined to agree with anonymous poster #2. And if this council can't keep the 5th senatorial district in a in african american leadership then it will have been totally useless.

Ald. Reed has a great chance to win this President of the Board of Alderman race.
There is plenty of diversity involved in this race, and the prospects of victory look great.

Given the choice of Jim Shrewsbury or Lewis Reed, which candidate is the black electeds group most likely to endorse?

Was Shrewsbury at the meeting? I heard Lizz Brown and Irene J. Smith discussing the black elected officials meeting on wgnu radio station. They said It was disgusting that Shrewsbury was going to be at a black elected official meeting.

Shrewsbury wants the black vote.

Shrewbury had been invited to the meeting by Alderman Carter in order to get back at Lewis Reed for filing. However there was enough pressure put on him to back off and he did. He also was hoping to be elected to lead the group which did not happen.

Irene Smith and Lizz Brown will never let the potty-gate incident on the floor of the Board of Aldermen be forgotten.

Just remember-- if Reed wins, Slay becomes unbeatable.

I'm glad we have almost 6 months before this election.
This will be one of the most interesting campaigns in city history.
Any predictions on a spoiler entering the race?
City elections perceived to black- white contests are always more interesting when there is a third candidate in the mix.
Maybe that's the next wrinkle in this campaign to unfold?

There will not be a black spoiler in the race. The spoiler will have to come from South St. Louis.
Everyone knows that Mayor Slay is with Jim Shrewsbury, and that Jim Shrewsbury only voted against issues that were not very important to the Mayor. They met in private to determine what the Mayor could accept Jim Shrewsbury voting against him on. They have private weekly meetings to discuss legislation that is in the Board of Alderman.
What people would think that the Mayor and Jim Shrewsbury don't talk about every issue facing St. Louis City?
The Mayor knew that Jim Shrewsbury would need to vote with Darlene Green sometimes to try to retain his seat, but name one piece of legislation that Jim Shrewsbury passed as the previous Alderman of the 16th Ward that has significantly impacted North St. Louis.
Anyone can straddle the fence when it is easy to do so, but what about when he was an Alderman in the 16th Ward that didn't endorse black candidates at all under his leadership.
In fact, didn't he run a nasty campaign against a certain competent black candidate out of North St. Louis for Comptroller, and now we are suppose to forgive him and believe that a leopard has changed his stripes!!!!!!
We will not be bamboozled in North St. Louis, Lewis Reed for President of the Board of Alderman on March 6, 2007!

It seems that the meeting got off to a very good start. But from reading some of the anonymous comments there will always be that one person in the group that keep the b.s in the mix because they may be afraid that black folks may come together and agree on something besides unproductive rumors.......p.s next time stay at home frustrated person!
