CNN is reporting that President Bush will announce today that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is stepping down.
UPDATE: U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) today released the following statement on the resignation of Rumsfeld:
"Last night, the American people sent an overwhelming message to Washington that it's time to change our failed course in Iraq, and today's resignation of Donald Rumsfeld is a belated step in the right direction," said Obama.
"But to truly end the ideological mismanagement of this war, we must replace not just a person, but a strategy, and that will take the work of both Democrats and Republicans finding common ground and common solutions in the weeks to come."

According to wikipedia and other online sources, his replacement, Robert Gates, apparently had some involvement in the Iran-Contra Scandal.
Great!

Talent. Rumsfeld. IT MUST BE CHRISTMAS!

Gates' involvement was more than some ... he barely escaped indictment.

Matty, this makes me wonder why Bush feels it is a good job to appoint someone with such a questionable record. The Senate must approve the nomination and it seems this might face opposition. Also, it seems apparent to me that these Cold War Era warriors are simply out of touch with modern warfare. Although Rumsfield stressed modernization and reform, his strategy clearly failed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Moreover, I can only say that it seems Justice Stevens might step down as well. Rumors of his health are not good. Hopefully a more liberal justice will take his place as the current composition is still a more liberal leaning majority. The Gonzalez v Carhart case is currently being argued.

Casey is one of Papa Bush's boys from the CIA. Add Papa Bush's boy (and Bush family fixer) Jim Baker, who is co-chairing a "how to get out of Iraq" committee report coming out in December. There may be something of a movement by Papa to try and (once again) bail Jr. out of another one of Jr.'s disastrous enterprise.
Unfortunately, Jr.'s previous botched enterprises included attempts at oil-drilling in West Texas and major-league baseball ownership, while Jr.'s current botched "enterprise" has killed thousands of our service men and women and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis.
While I very well could be allowing hopes and wishful thinking to cloud my judgment, perhaps we're finally going to have some rational (albeit criminal) types around to get us out of the Iraq mess.
Then again, Jr. is such a spoiled, petulant brat that he very well may not listen to Papa's advice.
Here's hoping Jr. will, anyway.

ie cut and run just like we knew you would and hevan forbid but when alkaida hits us agin it will all be the libs falte

Under the very hypothetical scenario I laid out, it would be Republicans Robert Gates, James Baker and George W. Bush who would be doing the "cutting and running." I guess these three guys are "libs?"
But, like I said, my hypothetical is quite far-fetched.
