RFT, WTF?

By Antonio D. French

Filed Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at 11:38 PM

The Riverfront Times completely snubbed PUB DEF in their 2006 Best of St. Louis listing. No best blog, no best website, not even best gadfly (which went to our friend, Steve Patterson of UrbanReviewSTL.com, for his war on Ald. Jennifer Florida -- Congrats, Steve).

You know, we might just be in the wrong town.

Bubba says: A French, you are a true gentlemen, gracious in defeat. Darnit, I thought we had it. Post my press release for a recount! Bottom Line: Pub Def RULES! Keep up the great journalistic endeavor PLAYER! We need to have a press conference and introduce the "office" to the world. PEOPLE remember: DON'T HATE THE PLAYERS, HATE THE GAME!

Thanks for the insight, Brian. You might be right about the low number of comments relating to large number of posts lately. I hadn't thought of that before.

What can I say? Lots of news lately.

Comments aside, people are visiting in record numbers -- 2,511 visits just yesterday (1,235 unique visitors).

All I can say is: Keep up, people!

Thanks to everyone who voted for and continues to support Pub Def. While the RFT's stock continues to fall, ours just keeps on rising.

This latest snubbing is nothing new. Why do you think we have that "Don't Hate" slogan around here. This is St. Louis, the hater capitol of the Midwest.

My grandma used to tell me "success is the best revenge." I'll just keep doing my thing.

Thanks again.

I aint no historian, but I fist noticed Pub Def when Sen. Coleman started looking to run for other offices. Then things really heated up at this site with the school board elections and then the 4th senate primary.

It’s very hard to go from zero to a hero in a year with low $$$$.

Look at Steve Paterson; he has been put in time as a Gadfly… I guess it Paid of for him?

Remember

A good Idea doesn’t start a revolution.

Putting up a sign don’t mean people read it.

A press relies don’t get you in the paper.

Getting a name or an issue on a ballot don’t mean people will vote for it.

It takes work.. face to face contact.. and lots of it.

So, come next September we should get us some shirts and let every one know we read Pub def and they should too.

Anony, I greatly appreciate your sentiments. But in 347 days, I've posted 1,018 stories on Pub Def and STLSchools.org and posted 217 videos on YouTube -- no one works harder than me.

Pub Def has been mentioned by the Associated Press in a story that ran all over the country, got a plug in Congressional Quarterly, written about in The Washington Times, and was featured on Fox 2 News. But no love from the local "alternative paper".

I'm reminded of a verse by Kanye West in "Diamonds are Forever": The only player that got robbed and kept all of his jewelry.

To hell with it, I've got work to do.

Antonio: The real issue is that Pub Def did not give the RFT an award!

By the way, the Archdiocese of St. Louis has the best website in St. Louis? Jesus Christ!

Antonio –

Few go get the sories like you do. No body breaks stories like you do.

My work hard comments are directed to us folks that just read your work.

Temple and Rowe have connections at the top for their blog marketing.

It’s on the thousand or so folks that read this blog frequently to grow this.

Should we form a committee GOT..PD (get out the Pub Def)?

So, what’s going on Monday the 16th?

The local media is jealous because you are 10 times better than them.

With their staff they cannot compete with the big baller Antonio.

Keep it up man. Keep blogging and I am sure you will get those dollars through advertising.

Once you get more money then you can fly to D.C. and do coverage? Maybe hire some extra staff? Either way you are headed for the top and you shouldn't let St. Louis keep you down. People here are haters and jealous of those who shoot for the stars.

Sorry dude. I voted for you for best blog if it means anything. But to be accurate, the RFT didn't snub you as much as their readers did--or at least the readers who chose to vote in their poll.

When are we going to have a STL indie media get together?

9/28/2006 3:45 PM

Blogger Antonio D. French said...

Thanks for the vote, Bill.

The RFT could give a squat about what their readers think. Steve Patterson won the Readers' Choice for Best Blog (Again, congrats Steve!), but that only got one line in the paper. The official "Best of" is selected by the staff.

Back in the day, the "Best of St. Louis" was a reader's poll. Now, the actual RFT "Best of" selection is made by the paper's editors and staff. And they think the best website in the city is the Archdiocese's.

Yeah, and the best donuts in town are Krispy Kreme (at least they were last year -- I haven't seen this year's)?

The hell they are!

Antonio,
We come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, and working hard. Seems to us you sure have proven that through a beautiful, well written canvas display which demonstrate ingenuity, complexity and just a general addiction of information.

So should you find yourself the victim of other people's (RFT) bitterness, ignorance, smallness or insecurities; remember, things could be worse. You could be one of them!

Great informative site...
