Petition Circulating at Polls

By Antonio D. French

Filed Tuesday, August 08, 2006 at 9:07 AM

People are near polling places this morning gathering signatures on a petition that would require a public vote before any public park land (such as Forest Park) could be sold to a private interest.

I disagree with this initiative in that it lets our elected officials off the hook.

We elect them to make these decisions.

Giving them a pass let's fence riding politicians continue their ascendency.

Get them on the record. Make them decide.

Let them debate and convince the rest of us.

This issue rests with the Board of E and A.

Political careers can be made or broken on these decisions. This is what they get paid for, not for passing the buck.

Funny thing is, some would let them pass the buck, only to hold the fence riders up as "progressives"

Easy job, being a St. Louis politician. Once elected, you're guaranteed your job.

Just remember the formula for success: Don't take any controversial positions.

Sold or leased? If asking for a vote prior to any sale, BJC is seeking to buy any part of the park. If asking for a vote prior to any lease, it's more than twenty-five years too late, as BJC is seeking to amend what would then become a grandfathered lease.

It needs 22K votes to get on the ballot.

Everyone needs to sign, because this is the Public's Park, and it should be a direct decision.

Don't worry, Doug. It will get on the ballot.

When I voted this morning, the lady circulating the petition was asking everyone, "Would you like to sign a petition to save our city parks?" Most people were signing without asking any questions.

What she should have asked was, "Would you like to sign a petitions to let our city elected officials off the hook?"

Is Anon. 1 and 4 really Callow?
It would make sense that the mayor who supports the lease would not want it on the ballot.
Maybe the people behind the petition don't care what this means to anyone politically, they just care that they don't lose part of their park.

If you want the deal killed, all you need to do is to get Shrewbsury and Green to vote it down.
