How Much Does a Vote Cost?

By Antonio D. French

Filed Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 2:44 PM

Jeff Smith raised $231,024.01 and received 6,755 votes, costing him $34.20 each.

Derio Gambaro raised $180,409.77 and received 4,261 votes, costing him $42.34 each.

Yaphett El-Amin raised $161,051.16 and received 4,618 votes, costing her $34.87 each.

Amber Boykins raised $102,705.04 and received 2,360 votes, costing her $43.52 each.

Kenny Jones raised just $4,570 and received 558 votes, costing him $8.19 each.

The four campaigns spent a total of $679,759.98 to get just 18,552 people to vote. That's an average of $36.64 per vote.

Note: The above numbers are based on the last campaign finance reports submitted by each campaign and assumes that every dollar raised was indeed spent.

In your analysis did you use dollars raised or spent?

Hell with how much people spent. That is the damn problem. Politics has become about dollars but lacks any sense!

Actually, I don't see any pattern at all in those figures. It's almost as if, in this case, the money didn't really matter!

Travis, as indicated by the editor's note, the numbers are based on the last campaign finance reports submitted by each campaign and assumes that every dollar raised was indeed spent.

So to answer your question: raised.

Come on you lazy bastards. Oh hell, do I have to do everything around here?

Fine. I'll do one more for you...

In the 60th District State Rep Race:

Jamilah Nasheed raised $25,150 as of her last campaign finance report dated July 10, 2006 (she likely raised more but has not filed another report yet). She got 1528 votes at a cost of $16.46 per vote.

Sharon Tyus raised $28,172 (including $15,000 loaned to herself and probably not spent entirely). She got 1315 votes at a cost of $21.42 per vote if she spent all the money, which she probably did not.

Shaun Simms and Bob Bartlett got so few votes it's not even worth calculating.

Now come on guys, you try. It's fun!

Travis? Doug?

Hey Antonio, I know how to access these reports.

I never asked any questions regarding your numbers, as they are pretty straightforward.

Looking at the numbers I think we should have elected Kenny Jones --- clearly he can get more out of a dollar than anyone else!

I think we should wait until the next reports come out (30 days after report), and base the analysis on dollars spent. The assumption that ever dollar raised was spent is faulty reasoning. Jeff Smith still have a general election to win, right? (Please note this last bit is sarcasm.)

How much of the cash raised by Nasheed ended up in the pockets of A.D. French and Associates?

How can you possibly pass yourself off as a "critical and non-partisan eye" when your a consultant to candidates, speechwriter, etc. as you advertise yourself on A.D. French and Assoiciates web-site?

I believe that in the real world, maybe not in St. Louis politics, that is considered at the least a conflict of interest.

Ms. Tyus, the answer to your first question is $600 ($500 to build her campaign a website and $100 to advertise it).

I made no secret about that. As a matter of fact, it is clearly stated on the bottom of her website (www.jamilahnasheed.com) as well as on the front page of my own (www.adfrench.com).

And as far as the whether PUB DEF is critical and non-partisan, that's up to my readers to decide.

I did work for Jamilah Nasheed but still wrote things critical of her (such as her unfortunate use of misleading yard signs). And I got complaining calls from her when I wrote favorable things about your campaign (such as your long list of endorsements or when I published copies of your campaign literature).

Similarly in the 57th District race, I gave equal exposure to Joe Palm and Talibdin El-Amin even though El-Amin also hired me to do his website and he advertised with PUB DEF.

The bottomline is this is my website. I own it. I have no editors and no one to prove anything to. People come to this site because they enjoy the information I provide.

I try to be fair and critical. But I don't ever pretend to be impartial. I am not. I have a unique perspective and I think that's part of the attraction.

As a resident of the 60th District, I personally think Jamilah Nasheed was the best candidate in the race. Apparently so did a lot of other people.

I think she will do a good job representing the interests of the people in her district -- and if she doesn't, I'll let her (and all of you) know about it.

Unique perspective!? .....Even if you say so yourself! Don't flatter yourself, your just a TOOL like every other political hack in St. Louis.

By the way, this isn't Sharon Tyus. I'm just a regular schmoe that recognizes hypocrisy when he sees it.

Antonio has provided fair and balanced (sorry I had to use that) coverage of the races. Eventhough, I suspect, he favored another candidate in the 4th district senate race, he was very fair to Jeff Smith.

We love Jeff Smith. He is better than 'Cats.' We voted for him many times.
