"Ugly Water," the new book by St. Louis native Joe Wood, tells the long-forgotten story of the 1894 lynching of John Buckner in Valley Park, located in south St. Louis County. Labels: Books
From the description: "It has been said that Lynching is a crime peculiar to the United States; that it is an American institution. One might say that where so ever one might dig, they may find such a story. I decided to dig in my own backyard. In 1894, the small village of Valley Park, Missouri became the setting of one of American History's most peculiar crimes. This startling and controversial work documents the details of one of America's biggest secrets. Everything you thought you knew about Black History... could be wrong."
The book is available for download for $7.78 or you can click here to order a paper version for $14.99.

Sounds like something worth reading, but I might get po'd.
St. Louis, from what I understand, was notorious for lynching folk - especially blacks.
The St. Louis area has some good history to be proud of, but some wicked, wicked anti-humanity history as well.

Brian Harris, I'm sure you are very proud of your rather lengthy essay, but you have already posted it once. Please don't keep reposting it.

This is a important story, and I wonder why we haven't heard it until now...
This story is not being taught in "traditional" St. Louis history. Not even in Black History 101. For a story to be suppressed for so long demonstrates the issues St. Louis still lives with.
