VIDEOS: More From RCGA Debate

By Antonio D. French

Filed Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 2:44 AM

Here are a few more videos from Tuesday morning's RCGA debate.

In the first video, Derio Gambaro again goes after Jeff Smith on his affiliation with Confluence Academy charter schools.

In the second video, Yaphett El-Amin also goes after Smith, this time on his level of commitment to the City of St. Louis.

In the last video, El-Amin points out a difference between her and Amber Boykins on the issue of health care.

Thanks for the great videos.

The dogs are circling.

I find it quite funny in the second video when Jeff says St. Louis is his home, someone says, I believe El-Amin, that he should leave!

Gambaro needs to learn to collect his words if he expects to attack an eloquent speaker like Mr. Smith.

Very observant, Doug. Mrs. El-Amin pulled my mic close to her early in the meeting thinking it was one of the mics that broadcasted to the room. For the rest of the debate, all of her whispers and quiet comments were crystal clear in my hears.

I hear that this kind of behavior is exactly why Yaphet can't get anything done in Jefferson City. She is so busy shooting her mouth off that she ends up insulting and pissing off everyone to the point that she stands no chance of being effective. I see Yaphet as the worst candidate of the bunch in this respect. I want to see someone get something done for the MO Democratic Party and the 4th district.

Does the same go for Gambaro? He seems to shoot his mouth off too.

I am less familiar with his reputation.

This is Rep. Boykins race. She is the one that's term- limited. She the one the people want. Rep. El- Amin should stay in whatever district she represents and quite running off at the mouth, she what's available in 2008. Jeff Smith.... No, No, No You are not St. Louis city material and your'e definately not 4th sentorial district. Where did this other guy come from?

Interesting.....

My observations from the reporting, videos and commentary:

1. While the videos make very clear the attacks on Jeff Smith, it is impossible to hear his responses. I wonder if that was also intended by Rep. El-Amin moving the microphone, as I am sure Antonio is above that kind of reporting.

2. Mr. Gambaro, big supporter of school vouchers, is attacking the Confluence Academies, which are public schools. Very interesting for a "Democrat."

3. Doug, I'm surprised by your observation about Mr. Gambaro's in-ability to speak well. He has always struck me as a slick politician, or salesman.

4. Equally interesting for Rep. El-Amin to attack Jeff Smith, co-founder of Confluence Academy (public school), volunteer coach at Matthew-Dickey, and former St. Louis Public Schools employee, on his commitment level to the City, when she has demonstrated through her divisive campaign, as Anon #1 very astutely pointed to, a lack of commitment to representing some residents of the City who do not fit her notion of urban America.

5. There is no mention of Kenny Jones. Is he even running?

6. What do term limits have to do with choosing the best candidate. I'm sorry that Rep. Boykins is out of a job, but that doesn't mean she should automatically get this one. She has demonstrated by her absentee voting record that she is possibly the worst candidate for the job.

7. Doug, you are absolutely right that the "dogs are circling." It is interesting that the opponents are attacking Jeff Smith, as they obviously see him as not only the front-runner, but the only serious competition in the race. All this sniping on Jeff Smith just goes to show how scared the other candidates are of his successful and on-issue campaign.

I TRY TO TELL EVERYONE THAT BOYKINS VOTING RECORD IS SHIT! I WISH PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT PEOPLE WOULD LOOK AT WHAT THEY HAVE DONE AND NOT WHAT THEY SAY THEIR GOING TO DO!!!

Mr. Brian Harris, you have admitted to others on the blog that you are black. So why are you using that type of language to describe the voting record of Rep. Boykins, this is not Def Comedy Jam.

By the way Mr. Harris, do you try to tell everyone about the problems that you feel every other elected official has, because I hope you spread the wealth. I would like to hear your thoughts about the problems other candidates in this race have.

Just spew your profanity across the Pub Def website, and show how we as black people can attack each other.

Your anger through profanity are because you have not taken the time to express your feelings through words.

Rep. Boykins missed somes votes during parts of her career in the legislature and the last week of session in 2005 due to the illness of her mother. Her mother is a breast cancer survivor and heart transplant recipient. It is so unfortunate that this is common knowledge in the political offices of candidates that oppose Rep. Boykins for the 4th Senatorial District; however, this situation keeps being pushed to the forefront. When this election is over, it will be hard to have real respect for certain individuals anymore. Regardless of the outcome, it is a shame that some people will do anything and attack any situation to win a political seat.

There are some real candidates that knowingly participated in some real bad situations that were within their control, and we attack a candidates committment to their mother over their legislative career.

I would have, could have, should have, yeah right, let your mother get ill multiple times when you don't expect it during the job you have right now and let us see what you do!!!!!!!!!!

I know that my order is God, family, from there it is subjective according to the situation!

If what you said is true about the cancer and heart situation, which I dont believe, I still dont understand how someone could be in office and do N-O-T-H-I-N-G for the community! People in the area cant tell you the first thing that she has done, How do I know, JUST ASK! Go to MO-STATE website and tell me if you find programs she supported or started that helped the northside other than keeping "the mans" pockets fat!

I live in the area and think she is a nice person. But I dont follow politics, Keep me out of that one! I never got the feeling she was underhanded.

Has any politician really done enough period according to the people that live in their area?

Most people have some complaints about their politicians that represent them, that is if they even know who they are.

These exchanges on this blog page seem to have crossed the line from the comments that are here.

Some of these comments seem to borderline on threats by some participants, and that is not what Antonio is trying to achieve.

Maybe everyone needs to just take a break before this gets out of hand

We all can be civil in order to keep this a decent blog page, can't we.

we sure can be civil, and stop trying to bring antonio into this, thats playing politics. we are openlly voicing our opinions about matters, and I just think you are working for boykins thats all, You maybe posting anonymous but you talk that same talk on all the topics you post on. And Im not saying boykins may have done some good in the hood but that if she did not only can I not see it visually around but I dont see it when I look up her record!

Rep. Boykins has provided support to the Fatherhood support center that is headed by Halbert Sullivan. Many brothers that are in need of help of getting back on their feet utilize this service. The service is located in the Prince Hall Family Support Center in the 60th District, located at Pope and Newstead.

Many of my brothers have utilized this service and the program is a major success. The program is comprehensive and requires attendance by the fathers for a number of weeks. Upon completion the program has a graduation ceremony. The program has had over 30+ graduations, imagine the impact this has had on the community. The program requires that any fathers that owe back child support payments make arrangements to repay the money to remain in the program, and the program provides job placement as well as emphasizes the father spending quality time with his child or children.

This is one of the many programs that Rep. Boykins has provided support for on a ongoing basis.

Remember we can't always know all that is going on in the neighborhood.

can you provide proof of this support? I know what the fathers support center is and it is a good program. But I dont believe what your saying. Prove it. But im not here to dog boykins, Im just saying some people shouldnt take money then get on here and talk onesided. Get off them nuts.

El-amin is cool ebonite, chill. Jeff is cool, El-amin has a good record but she has been fighting for blacks so thats how shes going to look on the seen. Now she wants to rule over blacks and whites, she has to create a new image, the whiteman dont feel good having a "sista" on his head. But I would vote el-amin before boykins, her record is a mess.
