Jeff carried the 24th ward by about 200 votes in his Congressional race, without the endorsement from any ward organization, committeeman, or alderman. My guess is he will do just as well this time.

Why? This race is going to be about turnout. Gambaro and Boykin will be automatic. The question is how many people can Smith get to the poll without the help of the Kerry and Claire camps?

It was an August primary. You are thinking about November turnout. Jeff will do just fine.

Like Conway's group in the 8th, the organization in the 24th is much more conservative than the ward's voters. This is the same organization that gave us Tom Bauer (before they turned on him after he got too attached to eminent domain). While Gambaro and Bauer were intraparty rivals, Gambaro had a number of established contacts there, because the pre-redistricting 24th was Gambaro's ward, and the current 24th contains a lot of the turf that Gambaro represented in the legislature.

Smith will carry this Gambaro-endorsed ward, as well as the 8th, and Gambaro will carry the Smith-endorsed 23rd and 16th. The endorsements will just reduce the margins by which they carry them.

I chalk this endorsement up to the fact that this ward includes the Hill. The Gambaro name just has traction in this area. But to everyone's point here, Jeff Smith will still get the votes of the populace, if not the establishment's endorsement.

Travis I am pretty sure that no part of the "Hill" is in the 24th Ward.

Oracle, I could be wrong about this, but I don't think this is the same 24th Ward "organization that gave us Tom Bauer." As currently constituted, the members of this committee have supported (tacitly and/or explicitly, individually and/or collectively) Bauer's opponents, all the way from Ribaudo (remember him?) through Corbett, Gambaro and Waterhouse.

Again, I could be wrong. This is just how I remember it.

A minor quibble, as I agree with your larger point.

The 24th Ward includes, among other neighborhoods, all of Dogtown, Clifton Heights and parts of Lindenwood. No Hill.

The old 24th include all of the Hill, Dogtown, and parts of Lindenwood.

The 65th House District when Ribaudo, Bauer and Gambaro served, included the Hill, Dogtown, Clifton Heights and part of Lindenwood. I believe the 65th remained essentially the same after redidtricting.

Oracle, I have not seen many Gambaro signs in the 23rd, while I have seen many Jeff Smith signs.

They are hard to see with your blinders on. Your head is so far up Jeffs #$%^ that you would not see the signs if they were on every lawn.

Matty Fred and Anon:

The 24th ward does include a portion of the Hill, as shown on the city's website at http://stlcin.missouri.org/alderman/alderman.cfm?Ward=24.

True, though Ward 10 has overwhelming majority of the Hill within its boundaries.

Matty fred and Travis both have grounds to claim to be right: Precinct 1 of Ward 24 is indeed part of the Hill. But that precinct has exactly zero registered voters. (It's all industrial, and exists only because of differing borders for wards and state rep districts.) It is a fact that no voters from the Hill are in the 24th Ward.

Matty fred may well be right about the political history of this particular 24th Ward organization. If so, there is another 24th Ward organization, one loyal to Bauer, that hasn't been heard from. They would be even more conservative than this one, but also very antagonistic to Gambaro on a personal level.

Lawn signs are a poor barometer of support. Many people are reluctant to put up signs in opposition to their ward organization, but the secret ballot lets them feel free to vote however they please. At the other extreme, signs often appear on property at the behest of the owner of the property (such as a vacant lot or apartment building) without regard to the wishes of the actual residents. (Real estate ownership and contacts caused a lot of signs for Bill Federer to appear on apartments where none of the people living there voted for him.)
