The St. Louis Board of Education tonight voted to table a proposal to close Cleveland High School to allow time for more public debate. They also requested that Superintendent Creg Williams provide more details on what problems are facing the building and exactly where the students will be moved next year.
The vote was 5-1. Board member Ron Jackson voted against tabling the motion and board member Bob Archibald left the meeting before the vote.

I can't understand for the life of me why any parent would subject their children to the environmental conditions that have been reported at Cleveland. The pictures of the peeling paint and what looks like extreme water damage make me question whether there are any health hazards in the building. Sometimes unseen dangers such as mold, asbestoes, and other airborn things can cause health problems that may not be seen for years.
This is just another example of how the district under the watch of many Boards over the years continues to pour good money after bad. I don't remember Mrs. Kirner or Mr. Schmidt standing up when schools in North St. Louis were being closed, and most of those were in much better shape than Cleveland.
I concider myself a preservationist, but sometime you have to draw the line. Besides, with all of the development happening in South St. Louis, surely they can find someone to redevelop the property into something that would benefit the neigborhood.

Anony ~ you mispelled "asbestos". . .but more importantly I agree with you whole heartedly. Our children deserve to learn in the cleanest, brightest environment our tax dollars will allow. I would not want to live or work in any builing that looked like Cleveland. I'm sure none of the Board Members nor the Administrators do.
Respectfully ~ Concerned Parent
