Blogging from Tennessee

By Antonio D. French

Filed Friday, May 12, 2006 at 10:00 AM

Picked up a copy of USA Today yesterday while on the road. The issue featured a story on St. Louis City and its "comeback" marked by a 4,000-person population increase since 2000.

It also featured photos and quotes from new City residents Brad Fratello and his dog Sebastian, who live in a downtown loft; and Eric Vickers, one of those 4,000 new city residents who moved from U-City to South City.

I read the article and thought it was very good. I'm happy for St. Louis.

And I absolutely love Eric Vickers' tireless advocacy for African-Americans, but I think that it is important note that although African-American participation in the regional boom could use some improving, St. Louis is doing a hellava lot better than in the past. There are plenty of projects to use as an example.

I think that should be noted too. I do agree that more inclusiveness is needed to insure that stagnation doesn't arise.

St. Louis is on a roll.

Sorry, but I thought it a little sad that, in response to the article's raising the question of equity and inclusiveness,Geisman is quoted as saying that 20% of the housing being built is affordable housing. Is that supposed to be "equity" or "inclusiveness"? Not that I necessarily blame Slay's administration; it's the economy: the poor and the working poor are just unable to afford $300K condos downtown, or the $200-400K houses that are being built around the City. While we are all glad to see the rich re-invest in the City, we have to also expect the poor to be squeezed out. What are we doing to provide jobs and housing for these people?
